Help with installing SRAM AXS GX on Rail 9

Hi everyone,
My Rail 9 2021 came standard with SRAM GX derailleur etc. I’ve just received my SRAM GX AXS upgrade kit. I have a couple of questions to ask those in the know before I install the AXS kit.

1. To remove the existing shifter cable, can I simply pull it through into the battery bay or do I need to remove the motor first (I‘d prefer to avoid this if possible)?

2. Will the current original chain length need to altered for the AXS derailleur? The SRAM install videos show checking the chain length and adjusting the length.

u dont have to remove the motor, pull battery unscrew tiny screws holding the cables in the battery bay and snake the cables out. remove motor as little as possible as those motor mount bolts dont like going back in properly

I upgraded to the GX ASX, the cable will just pull out. The outer I cut it into 2, which made it easier to pull from under motor. Chain might need to be shorter. I had to take to links out of mine. Just measure it how Sram advise in their user guide.

The cable came out easily but I was surprised at the number of bends in it. The outer took a bit more effort as some of the bends were quite tight, but it came out smoothly once the chain stay section was out.

Also… the existing chain was actually the correct length based on the sram instructions. My Rail is a medium.

I still need to adjust the limit screws and make fine adjustments but everything has worked out well so far.

That’s good to know, was strange why my chain was to long, I didn’t realise until it was in the lowest gear and the chain was touching the frame. One of the reasons I upgraded was because I couldn’t get the gears to work great. Never crossed my mind that the chain was incorrect size ?
