Todays the day when my son leaves home to go to Uni ..he is only going 40 miles down the road and is within easy access of home ..but is staying in digs..
Why is it then that Im sitting up at 2.00am , drinking coffee and scouring this forum for something to read with a heavy heart and tears streaming down my face ..
Im proud of what he has achieved to get there..and as with any teenage boy..socialising with his mates & his Playstation have long held priority over his parents ( or it seems that way ) ..but boy Im going to miss him ...?

Well it gives you a new route to ride out over to see him. Does he have decent riding near by?

My Son is just about to start his second year and in his own words is "having the time of my life"

Hopefully after the initial few weeks of settling in, making new friends etc. your son will be in a similar position.

40 miles is nothing, I went to Uni 350 miles from home!!That was a hell of a drive in the early 1980s... :)

You will adjust and it is hard but they need to 'grow' into themselves. Hard as a parent, I know...

Pro tip: make absolutely, positively certain that he leaves the Playstation at home.

Just think how much harder it was when my first daughter went to Uni. In addition to all the concerns about a lad being away from home, there are the extra concerns because my firstborn was a female. And why do they need so much stuff! First year was bad enough, the car was completely full. Second year required two cars. By the time we took her to her digs for the start of her fourth year, I had to hire a Hi-top Luton van to take her! I ended up having to take her front door off its hinges in order to get in the four-seater settee that she was taking with her!!! I even had to leave her bike behind because there was no room in the van! That had to go out on another visit.

I have two daughters and they were both at Uni at the same time for two years. Thankfully, two different Universities with different start and finish dates. A total of five years with at least one daughter at Uni.

What I clearly remember is the house filling with activity when they came home at term's end. Lights on and windows open all the time, the sound of hair driers blasting away, the phone ringing constantly, front door bell going when a hulking youth would turn up "Hello Mr Sordy, I'm Matt/John/whoever, I'm here to collect Sarah/Emma for the evening." We ended up being glad when they went back, just for the peace and quiet. :)

Oh and by they way, they come back! Happily for us, Mum & Dad's place is always "home".

don't worry mate, it will pass and then youll find you have more time on your hands to ride ;)

in all seriousness, they have to make their way in the world and it leaves you feeling like you're not sure of your purpose anymore.. it will pass.

A friend of mine left home to go to Uni. He took a single rucksack with him and never went back, not ever. When he eventually married and had kids and thought his parents might want to see their grandkids, he discovered that his parents had moved house. When he found them, they had downsized so that "there was no room for him to visit with an overnighter". They lived in North Scotland he lived near Portsmouth.

Sadly (it seems to me) not everyone gets on with their family. :(

My daughter left for a six month trip this year and was back in two weeks thanks to COVID. I’d already converted her room and then had to change it back……..

She’s off to Uni in another state next year. 900kms away. It’ll take a truck to carry all her shoes. We’re super close but I don’t do the sad parent thing. It’s not in my nature. Or hers, for that matter. I raised her to be a strong independent human. And now I have another excuse to travel to Queensland….

My 17 yo son looks like he may never leave………

Newcastle is a great town for student life, spent many a blurry weekend there visiting mates - I wonder if they still have that night-club on a boat with the revolving dance floor . .

The Tuxedo Princess..long gone ...
Newcastle is our closest city and where I spent my " youth " ..its changed a lot in the last decade ..never mind how many years its been since you visited ..
It is though a great " party " town ..and my lad is already very familiar with it ..
