The French company Gouach have started to produce ebike batteries which are repairable, they're also made from usable cells recovered from batteries which can't be repaired.

They have anew patented solderless design, so cells can be swapped out in 10 minutes :

The formats don't really fit with most emtb requirements yet, but the devkit one would possibly work for some of the DIY builds.

The batteries incorporate bluetooth and wifi,so there's also an app so you can monitor the battery for your phone or you can use your laptop with an app.

Hi, that is cool info. Unfortunately details on the items is only available by contact form and mailing - not received. In a German forum it was mentioned back kn 2021 and it appears that not much did happen since then.

Schade, as it is a great idea!

All batteries have the capacity to be rebuilt/cells replaced it is the firmware/software that companies install in order to make their system "proprietary" that is the fly in the ointment.

Also the transfer of the battery needing rebuilding to the rebuilder via standard shipping practices is problematic due to regulations. Perhaps as we go more towards battery powered mobility more local options will appear.

Disposing/recycling of "dead" batteries will also be an issue going forward.

Like any kickstarter ... might not see the sun or see the sun to avoid having to reimburse people from raising funds.

In any case there is no market with emtb, the form factor is very huge and I would never trust anything from a non trusted company to be plugged on my motor: has be to supported/certified either by motor or bike brand.

As mentioned above, the batteries these days are not just cells but firmware etc. I remember the days where I were hacking some machine machine by injecting somewhere from the batteries!

These folks are running now for a longer time. I am sure the recycling factor and sustainability will become more important, e.g. due to ESG rules becoming more and more mandatory for larger companies. As of today Bosch & Co has no interest to approve other than own equipments to keep their profits. But like with Tesla there might be people creating alternative solutions that work and may find interest of the big players and adopt them to improve their own ESG reputation.

If I buy today a new 400 / 500 Power Pack for my 2014 Bosch Active Line commuter this is very expensive as original Bosch but there is no guarantee that it was not sitting for years on a shelf. On the other side we have in Germany one or two small shops in business for long time that are experts for opening Power Packs and replacing cells on high quality standards. Why not give it a chance?

BTW, I hate to go with a car/moto every year for a oil change to keep warranty alive even if running just 2000 miles p.a.. Or to replace break fluids every second year without checking water content and driving race courses. Thats a real waste of resources.
