I did drop those into another thread but it's been sensibly moved out by a mod.

A bit more information following on from the accident.

Even with the halo, looking a the photo of the front of the car wedged under the barrier, I'm amazed he got out at all and with only burnt hands!

It was deeply shocking. The retardation measured at 53G so it’s amazing he was conscious let alone had the ability to get out of the car in the middle of that inferno.

Thought you didn’t watch the F1 anyway.

Yes, it's incredible. You think what we're like when we've dived through some branches and he's just fired himself through armco? barrier at 137mph - leaving it in tatters then been engulfed in flame, I can't even begin to think what state your head is in with that level of deceleration not to mention the disorientation with the car on it's side. Must of been mips ;)

incredible, the driver pod stuck in that barrier, full of fuel and burning.. he got away very light.
gonna be the first to be unpopular and say he brought it on himself, he consistently makes some of the most reckless moves on track and takes no responsibility for them, I am surprised he has managed to stay in a seat this long.. dont get me wrong, im very glad he got away with that but like many other incidents, he was the cause of that one.

He’ll be sore today and very thankful to be alive I expect. He’s out of a drive for next year so I doubt we’ll see him in a F1 car again... I expect he’ll retire and devote time to his wife and three kids.

You're always popular ! It's your good looks, charm and youtube channel dedicated to man grooming.

I have to agree, from the little I've seen of F1 over the last few years, one thing that's always jumped out is what crazy moves and decisions Grosjean's pulled. He reminds me of me on an MTB !

Horrible. That's the one scenario Armco can't work. A head-on. It's designed to deflect a vehicle along the line of the barrier.

Glad he's OK, and yes, he does move too much, especially at the start.

He’s a nice guy and quick when the stars align... he had some good results back in the Lotus days. He makes some questionable racing decisions though and has never really excelled in wheel to wheel action.

But it wasn't head-on - it was a very oblique angle, which makes the accident even harder to fathom.
Agreed, it wasn't far off 90 degrees to the barrier but the direction of travel was still along it. Somebody on the coverage mentioned the Armco has cutouts in it (for cameras?) which might have contributed.

I am surprised there has not been more analysis of how he ended up hitting the barrier at that angle. It looked suspiciously to me like the Senna ( fatal) accident where the car spears off in a straight line, most likely in that case due to a broken steering. Even Grojean's initial move to the right looked quite radical and then despite the rear of the car getting tagged quite hard the car did not spin or even appear to scrub. I know the shunt was at relatively high speed and the car was heavy with fuel but it just did not look right to me.

Here's the best blow by blow account from various driver's point of view...

Link to youtube video

edit: changed to link as media won't play outside of youtube in some regions.

yep I saw that...if you check 5.23 the angle at which Grosjean crosses the track has him going straight for the barrier even before being tagged from behind. He was doing c 140 mph and that manoeuvre at that speed would have been a very quick flick right and then left on the steering wheel. If indeed he already had left lock on and was then tagged from behind it would have spun the car. It looked to me like he started moving to the right and at that moment he no longer had any control over the steering so either his front right tyre was punctured and deflated quickly or something on the steering broke. The complete destruction of the car would of course prevent any meaningful examination of the car.

It’s incredible how he remained conscious after a 50G impact. No one can explain how he could breathe superheated air for that long either, unless he instinctually held his breath throughout the entire ordeal. He may also have been undoing his steering wheel and harness by feel, with his sight obscured by the flames. A barrier strip ended up directly above the small opening of the halo structure... somehow he found a way past it - while still engulfed in flames.

Perhaps me being amazed about how strong that halo really is, is an understatement!
