E shifting

Hi I want to change my 21 169 rs to E shift. For 2 reasons can never get my levers comfy and I suffer with arthritis.
So anyone gone down this route ? Price ? Ease of fitment and options appreciated. Thanks.

Are you talking a bout an E160RS??
By E Shift...do you mean AXS? If so it will only fit if you have the UDH derailleur hanger and there is plenty of info on this site and YT about pricing and fitting....................or are you referring to twist grip gear change??

Yes E160 rs I have no idea of what carrier I have. I want easy peasy shifting in a comfy place. So need button shifting

You just need to swap the mech and shifter to AXS. The original AXS will bolt straight on and is dead east to set up. Will work with existing cassette/chain etc. No need for UDH, that’s only needed for the Transmission version.

Choice wise, I’d go GX.

It is very, VERY important that you do NOT use matchmaker clamps or reuse existing shifter clamps if you truly want a comfortable setup, particularly with AXS given the unique offset of the shifter pods. This is the proper clamp for the AXS shifters:


And depending on your choice of brakes, you'll get a corresponding clamp for the lever.

It has this ATM
SRAM X01 Eagle, 12 Speed

You can just get a derailleur, battery, charger and shifter (which will come with the proper clamp). 10-15 minute install. Probably a good opportunity to throw a fresh chain on too. I'd recommend going with X0 than GX. A little more expensive but different/better materials of construction.

I didn't want to get locked into any particular brand and be able to use the drivetrain I already had and just wanted to get rid of the cable activated shifting. The D1x works with any brand and any speed config. I admit that it took a few tries to get it dialed in but after that it has been flawless. The main issue I had was that dialing it in on the stand via the app and how that worked on the trail under load was a bit off but once I understood that all was good.

Electronic shifting does require another set of batteries to keep track of.

...though with AXS, some eMTBs can integrate battery status (and gear position) into their onboard displays.

I’m running AXS with Matchmakers on two bikes and happy with the position. Have heard loads of people complain about the shifter pods but I like them. People forget there are two directions of MMX mount and two bolt holes on each. This gives 4 mounting positions. With arthritis though the separate clamp may be useful and both my shifter pods came with one.

Don’t worry about the battery, they last for ages and charge in an hour.
Only bad thing is you’ll want a matching AXS reverb!

Thanks for info guys appreciate it. Think I want sram system ideally.
But my next move will be hope brakes I hate these SRAM ones levers fall and fit in fingers nice. But I'm just not happy with them.

Either of those kits contain all you need. Never used that shop but prices seem the best around. The X01 is also available with grey cage instead of the red. XX has the same mechanism as X0 just with a carbon cage and not really worth extra. Just search “AXS upgrade kit” for your options.

What brakes did it come with? Mine has the basic Code R which had good feel but lacked a bit of bite. Going up to 220mm rotors made a big difference in power.

Glad it works for you. It's actually the wrong offset by a few mm though. Hated it until I got the proper mount. All dialed now though!

Can I ask what in what you mean by wrong offset? Everyone has different preferences in set up and I can imagine the matchmaker may not give enough rotation around the bar but can’t picture what you mean. Is it a case of not being able to move it far enough away from the brakes?
Also had a look at the clamp you linked to but can’t see a difference between that and the clamp my shifter came with. Not trying to pick an argument, just curious.

I think the upgrade kits can be had with the rocker paddle shifter, but they are usually significantly more expensive than the cost of the standard one plus a £20 upgrade paddle. Been tempted to try the rocker version but I’m happy with the original ones, although I know I’m in the minority on that one.

Excuse my lack of image editing skills, but this should help. Notice that the AXS clamp puts the shifter a few mm out further than either of the other two. It's a subtle difference but noticeable.

The rocker upgrade is what I did on my bikes too. I just installed the T-Type tranmission on my Levo, but I kept the Rocker shifter - didn't like the Pod shifter. Totally personal preference. Some people love the new Pod design.

I think we can all agree they're just weirdos. Those things look like a Go Pro stuck under your bars!
Just wish we could get the wee Blips that the road groups get. Seem some pretty trick world cup XC bikes with custom set ups.
Or these .....

The good news is that all of the AXS controllers (thus far) pretty much work with all of the AXS derailleurs.

+1 for Archer D1X electronic/wireless shifting.

Just finished installing and setup on my E10 build.

Two notes:
  1. The Archer paddles are very comfortable / very happy with them.
  2. Archer have just released their next gen D1X shifter, with among other updates, an ability to be powered direct from an e-bike battery. → The Updated D1x Trail Shifter - New Features!
