E*13 chainrings for EP8 on Rise - new ones are steel?

Just fitting my different brakes to my new M10 and noticed the chainring seemed super heavy and it seems to be magnetic - whereas the one on the old 21 M10 definitely wasn't. It's the same shape as the alu ones on e13 site, but doesn't have the machining.

Conclusion has to be that the new bikes are fitted with steel chainrings. Good for longevity, not so much for weight - 222g. seems strange that they've done this on a bike where they're chasing grams

E13 doesn't seem to have any steel rings listed on their site
The old style alu ring is listed at 137g, the new style 115g (perhaps lockring weight included in one but not the other.

I see they also do an 85g spider as well now - so a 100g steel chainring with that would be a cheaper, lighter solution long term. (and an alu ring as light as the old all one piece).

lol at alloy chain rings on an e bike…. What’s the saying about a fool and his money? ….. good luck, let us know how long they last. If you do any real climbing it will be toast in 500 miles.

I got 4000 km out of the alu one on my 21 rise. It’s well overdue replacement but it still just about works.

I got 2k miles from the alloy version. If I hadn't been so lax with changing the chain, I'd probably have got much more.

When I bought a replacement, I noticed there were steel and alloy available. I couldn't bring myself to fit something heavier so went for another alloy. £50 for a couple of thousand miles seemed like good enough value to me.

It is strange though that they started sticking the steel version on from the factory. Like you say, it's aimed at being a lightweight bike so you'd have thought every gram would matter.
Perhaps it was a way to increase the weight difference for the M Team to make it more attractive.

all the little bits of weight add up - lightweight alloy carrier with a steel ring would seem the best solution but, given that's two of us who've got over 2000 miles from the alloy it doesn't seem a bad option.

(where did you see both for sale? and where did you find it for £50?)

Tredz had them both when I bought mine. It was a few months ago now though. It might have been £60 for the alloy minus the traditional £5 voucher.

Looks like they're only £58 direct from e13 but the 32 is out of stock there and most other places that I've just checked.

I read on here somewhere that the OEM version had reliefs cut out of the back of the spider and the retail versions fouled the motor bolts but my OEM one didn't have any reliefs and the retail version fitted just fine.
