Ducati and Thok bikes partner on to create Ducati MIG-RR

Is this the start of a new wave of Motorcycle manufacturers releasing EMTBs?

Although this is not actually a Ducati, this is more of a branding partnership with Thok, who have the Mig R. It looks like Ducati have partnered with them to produce the bike, maybe to test the waters? Interestingly its going to take centre stage at the upcoming Ducati World Premiere (their annual bike reveal show).

Differing from the regular Thok Mig, Ducati have specced this with:

- 170mm Fox Factory 36 with a front 29" wheel and 160mm travel at the rear with a 27.5" wheel
- Mavic Wheels
- Renthal Carbon bars
- Shimano Saint brakes

The bike is based around the Shimano E8000 motor, with a 504Wh battery.

Release date: Spring 2019.

On Sunday 4 November 2018 the Ducati World Première in Milan (streamed live worldwide on www.ducati.com starting at 19.00) will unveil, in addition to the latest Ducati models for 2019, the new Ducati e-mtb, the MIG-RR, an enduro born out of close collaboration with Italian company Thok Ebikes.

E-mountainbikes let cyclists take on climbs that, without the motor boost, wouldn't be possible and, at the same time, they allow everyone to live the off-road on two wheels in total freedom. E-mtbs sales are booming worldwide. Ducati has now entered this market segment relying on the experience of a specialized company, Thok Ebikes, born from the passion of the BMX and Down Hill champion Stefano Migliorini.

The Ducati MIG-RR, which will make its public debut on the Ducati stand at EICMA 2018 (Fiera Milano Rho, 8-11 November), is a true high-end e-mtb developed by Thok Ebikes specialists in close collaboration with Aldo Drudi's D-Perf and the Ducati Design Center.

While the new Ducati e-mtb is an offshoot of the popular MIG series produced by Thok, it features some unique technical solutions: wheels with different diameters and suspension set-ups with different degrees of wheel travel (29" and 170 mm at the front, 27.5" and 160 mm at the rear) make it a true enduro that meets the needs of even the most demanding rider.

With high-level components such as FOX Factory Kashima suspension, carbon fibre Renthal handlebars, Mavic wheels, 4-caliper Shimano Saint brakes and an 11-speed Shimano XT gear set, the MIG-RR features a Shimano Steps E8000 motor - which puts out 250 Watts with a torque of 70N - powered by a 504 Wh battery.
The battery is positioned underneath the down tube. The resulting low barycentre makes the Ducati MIG-RR an easy-to-ride yet precise bike even on the toughest terrain.

The Ducati MIG-RR will be distributed throughout Europe via the Ducati dealership network starting from spring 2019.

Yeah I’d agree, looks to have done away with the rubber strap over the battery from the pics I’ve seen too. Looks the part doesn’t it ?

I wouldn't call this 'the start of a new wave of Motorcycle manufacturers releasing EMTBs', more like a continuing trend that I expect will gain even more momentum. KTM and Husqvarna, both world leading manufacturers of some of the best off road motorcycles you can buy already have several models of Ebikes available. It makes total sense as many parallels can be drawn between the worlds of off road motorcycles and the Embt class, riding techniques, apparel, styles, tech and components. I think we will also see some of the technology and trends of the motorcycle dirt rider creep into the dirt ebike riders world. Body armor, helmets, gloves, jerseys, goggles all are very close and even interchangeable. I actually sold my dirt bike to buy my Moustache Race 8, and just like my motorcycle obsession, began immediately to upgrade and swop out components on my Eride. I even use my Klim dirtbike jersey and my 100% googles to ride my Ebike, and why not? And just the other day as a heavy branch slammed into my knuckles on the trail I thought to myself, mmm... I wish I had the bushwacker hand protectors off my dirtbike on my Ebike. I can't wait to see where this all ends up and I'm sure the rest of the motorcycle manufacturing giants will follow suit.

If you ignore the ducti branding it looks like an interesting bike - i like the battery mounting in terms of lowering/centalising the weight. Assume Thok will have identical non Ducati model in their line up next year.

The frame on this looks to be the standard MIG frame, the guys at Thok believe they have got it right and don’t plan on releasing new frames each year as they value the product they have and don’t want to decrease its value by superseding it every year so to speak. I guess the RR comes from the motorbike world and is essentially hinting at a tuned up spec of the existing MIG and MIG R. The only major difference is the livery and components upgrades. The chassis (if we’re speaking in Ducati terms ?) is exactly the same as what they already sell at Thok

Yup there is not an equivalent model in their own lineup.

Same frame as the Thok MIG bit upgraded components (a bit like their anniversary edition previously released) + Ducati spray job and a few small tweaks, the biggest being wheel size that’s already been mentioned. I’d love to get my hands on one! Or at least see how my Thok MIG rides with a 29 on the front ?
