Engelbert Strauss order arrived today - very impressed with the quality of the boots. I'm going with the Peitho mids, mainly because I should have sized up in the big Tethys boot.

Their sizing is accurate but the forefoot is slightly narrower than I'm used to so bear that in mind - particularly with winter socks on. Will probably swap to quicklaces on them too.

I reckon that the Tethys boot would also do the job - incredibly lightweight for its size. Central Boa system, really good footbed that's designed to take an orthotic if you need one. Plenty of arch support in them to - coming from the boot itself rather than the footbed. Ankles very well protected. On trying them on the only concern I had was that the tongue gusset near the ankle finishes quite low down - possibly would have an effect on water coming in.

Back to the Peitho and the soles look and feel ideal for pinned flats. Lugs are about 3mm deep. Satisfying sticky noise when you pull them off wooden floors. Good ankle padding too. Bit of a bargain at under £70 I think

Peitho Mid (yes, I know they won't look like this for long)

The Peitho Mids are excellent... I’ve been very pleased with mine, which currently look like this (dry inside though):

Used these for the first time last week and they were warm, dry and very comfy. Grip on the flats were OK, not the best but not slippy in the wet either. Can live with that.

Feet were dry even after hosing down with the Worx Hydoshot.

Unfortunately mine are on the way back. Worn them round the house for a couple of hours and have ended up with numb toes. Just not quite wide enough for my feet. Can't size up to 44 to get the width - in a trainer I'm normally a 42 so they'd be too long.
Back to the drawing board, going to try the O'Neal Loam WP next

So the O'neal Loam WP arrived. Another nope. If you're considering these, go up at least a size (and probably two if you're intending to wear thick socks with them). I can tell without getting them wet that the neoprene cuff won't keep water out as there's a big gap between the tongue and the cuff - tongue's not gusseted all the way up.
They are well made and very well padded - plenty of protection in this shoe. Not convinced that the sole would be sticky enough for flats and the insert that covers the cleat holes isn't well sealed - you're going to get water coming in there and soaking the ball of your foot.
Plenty of room in the toe box but a bit tight around the mid-foot. I'm a 42 and even a 43 was too tight - couldn't get the lace cover all the way over the top of my foot.
Next stop - kayaking shoes. Looking at Astral & Palm

Buy Showers Pass waterproof winter socks. Merino wool lined. I kid you not these are the best bit of winter clothing you’ll ever buy they are totally water proof and warm.
you can ride in crocs and your feet won’t get wet ? NOT CHEAP

I gave up and bought the standard TrailCross Mid in the end. So comfortable, dry quickly if they do get wet, and the ankle cuff is nice and high. Roomier than standard FiveTen sizing but I went up a size and half to fit winter socks and my wide feet in. Easy on/easy off too. As soon at the Goretex version arrives I'll have them. The non-Goretex version only seems to let water in on top of the foot under the laces - unless of course its so deep it ends up going over the cuff.

I just ordered a pair of vaude Moab AM stx flat pedal shoes, they're supposed to be fairly waterproof, but we shall see.

Like the look of them bad boys
I'll report back when I've done a couple of soaking rides with them. Yesterday's ride in five ten freeriders pros was the final straw, I'm now too old for cold and wet feet....

I am a plumber. I always wear Carhartt toe boots. I'm very pleased because aside from being water-resistant, its leather material is also chemical, slip, and oil resistant. These characteristics provide the shoe with excellent traction when standing or walking on slippery surfaces.

Being a plumber you'd need waterproof boots :p

I hate being cold/wet (especially feet) so never really rode in the winter months. But this year, having the EMTB I decided I’d ride the winter so invested in waterproof/warm stuff.

I am a spinner rather than a jumper/downhiller so SPD works for me.

I have the NorthWave GTX Arctic Boots and I wear with waterproof long trousers (in 20 years I’ve never tried long trousers) currently MT500 jacket and trousers. It’s expensive kit but I’ve been out 15-20 times and have been warm and dry as a bone after these post-2 hour rides....definitely worth the money. (2nd pic was with Shimano Waterproof boots, OK but not great)

I think the key is a flap over the laces - I have waterproof and not water proof shoes, and TBH I cant really notice any difference if I am wearing waterproof socks - where I do notice the difference is with drying them out, and all th ones with exposed laces are a PITA

So, these

AM Moab Mid STX | Bike Shoes | VAUDE

Turned up today , they fit nicely, I'm a size 9 in normal shoes, and I ordered a size 9 and they fit fine.

I'm yet to use them on the bike, but they seem well made, the sole seems pretty grippy/sticky. They appear that they will be waterproof, but only time will tell.

How do you achieve this. I've just bought some Endura MT500 overshoes. Once they are on they are snug and cosy and I feel sure they will keep my feet dry but getting them on is like going 5 rounds with Mike Tyson in both time and effort so I'm not convinced that they will be practical for me. It's not just keeping my feet dry that's the issue, I think it's also advisable to keep the shoes dry if at all possible. What do you do? I'm talking flatties by the way.

Al

I have the same overshoes - put them on the shoes before u put the shoes on tpur feet

I recently purchased some Ride Concept Powerlines when I couldn't get any 5.10's and been very impressed with both the grip on flats and their waterproofness (a lot cheaper too). Not perfect but very good in most conditions except the worse

So, just been out for a soaking wet ride in the vaude Moab AM stx shoes, and can report that they're pretty good.

Grip wise on the flat pedals they're not quite as grippy as the five ten freeriders pros, it just feels like the sole on the vaudes is made from slightly harder rubber, but the grip is still sufficient.

Waterproof wise, they are fully waterproof, nothing leaks in from the outside, they're totally sealed. The only time water will get in is if it goes over the top of the ankle section.

All in all, I'm impressed, worth a punt, but for total waterproofness you'll need long trousers to go over the ankle of the boot.
