Decoy upper headset (for a change)

Hi guys,

Had my Decoy core 3 for about 1 month now, absolutely love it.

My left arm is paralysed from the shoulder down, founds ways of doing things so can ride ok.
But on my old bike i had a Hopey steering damper, this provided a LOT more stability.

Hopey are no longer in business a company in Australia are now producing them, but they're nearly 3 times the price Tim was charging, so i'm looking at alternatives.

I have a Cane creek Hellbender Visco i've had for a while to experiment with, but it didn't fit my old bike.
I'm measuring the OD of the upper bearing at 41mm

Question i have is:
Does this black collar come off as well?

If so has anyone removed it and measured the upper frame diameter please?

Cheers
Mark

The black collar is your headset cup. They're can be removed yes, but usually to be replaced with another headset cup that's maybe different, like an Angleset reducer

Thank you
So if i remove this, I'm guessing I will need a 44mm headset to replace it?

The headset will just press in as normal

That's a decent guess, but without removing it and measuring it I wouldn't say with 100% certainty

I think that is basically a seal. Id imagine your stem or stem spacers alone, without that sealing cap, would hold the bevelled top race in the bearing. Cant hurt to try it without that top cap/seal. The headsets in the decoy arent the best quality. Mine didnt last long. I replaced my headset with a -1⁰ works components headset. Its a EC44-ZS56. You may want to just replace the top headset cup with a flush/no stack 44 though. Im not sure if most companies have zero stack/flush tops but i know hope sells tops and bottoms seperately.
Works components are a good deal though and theyve lasted well for me. I have a flush 5mm reach works components headset waiting to be installed. Its for a straight 1 1/8 steerer(not tapered) for when i get a triple clamp dh fork. They probably have flush top headset options for various angles, reaches and steerers though.
