Damaged rim...

Hi all, new to the forum as a poster but been taking in all the info on offer here for a while.

I had an OTB moment at Cannock Chase on Friday...

Managed to flatten the edge of my rim so it’s now dead (wounded when the bike is only a month old ?) but guess these things happen.

I’m after advice to see if there’s any way to either prevent or minimise the chances of doing it again?

Full sus, pressures correct as per spec, 29er wheels and I was running 24psi on the front when it happened. Just bad luck? Ordered a DT Swiss Hybrid rim as a replacement as I have no idea what the Syncros stock ones are... TIA

Hi u could run a tyre insert there all different but I think cush core work best at protecting your rim but there expensive or a cheaper option I noticed your running exo + tyres if your aggressive or live in a rocky area I'd go tougher tyre if your sticking with maxxis go DD but tbh u could sing a rim anytime I've just ripped the bead clean off my Hutchinson griffus tyre and it was 2 ply I've gone full metal jacket 4ply MSc gripper tyres now ?

I'm a bit intrigued by what happened to you here.

I think you're describing an impact that 1) sent you OTB and 2) knacked your rim. What did you hit? If you fit an insert and otherwise toughen up the rim, you may fix 2. but you'll still suffer from 1.

This is a long shot here based on pure assumption: Perhaps you're running your front fork too soft. Any suspension system coming to the end of its travel puts peak loads into the attached component - this is where it is best to have capability in reserve and definitely avoid the garbage advice of using all your travel every time you ride.

As I say, far too much based on assumptions. Please disregard if not relevant.

Where did you find a DT Swiss hybrid rim in stock? My specialist subject is destroying rear wheels and I'm in need of a rim.

Yeah, impact that sent me OTB’s. Tight tree lined section and was concentrating on getting the bars through the trees, root with a small drop and pot hole behind it, didn’t pull the front up quick enough after I saw it ??‍♂️

I’ll try increasing fork pressure a little too as I’d noticed it was using the full travel ??

Got a full wheel from Wiggle and a replacement rim to build the other back up as a spare from Bikester (HX 531)... Bikester cover any import duty etc too
