Custom paint job

Anyone had their bike done? I know there are quite a few methods but I'd be cool to hear and see if anyone has done a really slick job, if it's done right it looks so awesome to have the exact colours you want, I am having a look at some local places with a colour change in mind maybe in a year or so, will also help hide any scratches and dings :-D

Was looking to get mine done into a hi-vis yellow colour and match parts of course. Then i'd build myself a matching themed wheelset.

What theme inspires you?

I have had lots of powder coating done to bikes down the years, mostly matte black but some variations, including a gunmetal metalflake.

That RAF one is a beauty. Saw it at the NEC and boy was it a stunner.

No I had it done for 50 quid at the local industrial powdercoaters as its only matt black, but I did contact those guys as they seem to be able to do stuff with powder coating that I haven't seen done elsewhere, and I have some ideas for my Sommett that mix colours, and thought I would have to go down the painting route, which is ££££. They have a very good rep. Never seen this done with powder coating for example, which CTC did.

I used this company when I lived in London, did a good job on a few frames for me:

Love the purple, like the city lights, but should have taped the inner seat tube. Maybe someday on the next build, but for now it's vinyl wrapping for me.

That's very cheap, did you have to do the prep yourself?

Yeah it should be in that range for a standard matt colour, maybe 10 quid more for gloss. The ones that specialise in bikes tend to charge more. Most powdercoaters have plates/bungs etc they use for blanking off the head tube etc - all I did was leave an assortment of spare screws in the fixings (e.g brake mounts, motor mounts etc) to make sure the threads didn't get damaged - her it is before it went off

I bought some paints from Spray.bike a while ago, but not had the courage to use them yet! Probably wait til the bike is a bit older

Just to add on the powder coating, they may charge more for a Full Suss, as they tend to charge by the amount of parts being done, so when broken down a full suss is perhaps 6 to 8 parts, whereas a hardtail is just one. E.G I paid 50 quid for my HT, but also had the stock Vitus stem done as the same time which they charged me an extra 5 quid for

In Nov'16 I bought a 7-year old bike for my grandson, his first 26er. It was a Giant Xtc2 with a carbon rear triangle. It was a very good bike when it was new, but over the years, all the expensive parts had been replaced with cheaper options. The colours had faded badly and overall it was a sorry looking sight. He didn't like the look of it one bit. And I don't blame him

But I had confidence that I could turn it around. For the paintwork, I prepped it and took it to my local hole in the wall one man car spray shop. For £100 he sprayed it Audi laser red. I replaced a few bits and pieces (fork, seat tube, saddle, stem, bars, grips, brakes, gears, tyres!) I couldn't have it plastic coated for less money because the oven was too hot for the carbon fibre rear triangle, or so the paint shop told me.

The not too shabby looking result!

As the last few years have passed, he's had new Mavic Crossmax wheels and a wider bar. He's a happy bunny.

Except that he gets all the admiring comments! (He is 11 now and he has been riding since he was 2, his third word after Mama and Dada was bike! I kid you not!)

I am the same number of years older than my grandson than my grandad was older than me. But he sat in his rocking chair all day, smoking his pipe and reading the newspaper. How times and expectations change!
