Does anyone have tips for cleaning the chain ring on a gen4. The cover/guard thats attached pops off now and then so i cable tie it on.
Has anyone removed it completly?
Is it better to keep it on and just remove it everytime for a clean.

This cover/guard is not present on many bikes with gen4. I think you can remove it permanently without any problems.

Not sure what it is supposed to do. There is no guard on my Whyte or on my wife's Cube hardtail.

It could act as a bash guard for the chain ring .
The narrow wide system should keep the chain on the chain ring .

It's more likely to be a 'trouser guard' to stop them getting chewed up.
On the 2020 models only the Allroad versions of the mountain bike hardtails had any kind of chainring cover.
But looks like most of the 2021 hardtails and the Allroad versions of full suspension bikes have them too.

Unless you're commuting, I think you'd be ok leaving it off

I use the bike for commuting and trail rides, but i agree with yours and other opinions and ill ditch it. I dont think my commuting atire would catch or mind a bit of chain rub anyhow.
