Mixed wheel size is interesting , something I’ve always been keen to try . Not sure about bigger rear tyre , thinking in pedal bike terms that’s going to make it hard work and harder to chuck about

A percentage of this years KTM range of eMTB's feature the mixed wheel size. I'm hoping that mid spring might see me with a 2018 Fogo 271, that has exactly that.

I tried a test fit of a 29” wheel front wheel on my bike last week which worked ok. Not ridden it in that configuration yet as I was also messing about trying a longer shock to take it up to 160mm travel. Not having the correct bushings for the shock I couldn’t use it at the time.
The appeal of the two sizes to me is keeping a plus tyre on the back for climbing traction then the better roll over of the 29er up front with reduced squirm of a more conventional width tyre.

It is interesting in the article where they talk of the issues Canyon had as a direct seller trying to sort out couriers & transportation for ebikes and batteries. Perhaps they could be persuaded to establish a side business of ebike/battery transport to aid with peoples travel ideas.

My thought of fitting a 29 er front to a 27.5 was to make the head angle slacker basically turn a trail bike into an enduro , plus the advantage of the better roll over with 29
Problem was for most bikes different forks were required
We tried it with a cannondale trigger lefty and it looked fine but the 29 er wheel had a narrower hub so we couldnt actually ride it
Next is to try a 27.5 rear wheel in my 29er I have heard of a few bikes running like this at enduros

It will certainly slacken the head angle. I was really surprised at the difference in rolling diameter between my 29x2.5” wheel & 27.5+ x 2.8”.
I have Yari forks on both my bikes so have no issue with the two sizes.

Really miss a Lefty, the one I had is now on my daughters hard tail!

I can get 29 or 27.5 in my levo might give the different wheel thing a go.
I compared a 29 2.35 magic Mary to a 27.5 2.8 magic Mary and I think there is about 8-10mm difference in height. with a 29 on the front that would be like going from a 150mm fork to a 160mm which would slacken the head angle by 0.5 degree

I posted the picture elsewhere but here is the difference between my 29” rear with 2.5”WT Maxxis compared to 27.5” x 2.8”, rather more than I was expecting!

It may have a bit to do with rim width. The 29” is 33mm id the 27.5” 40mm id. Normallywider rims make tyres taller though....

That does surprise me , I thought 29 and 27.5 were closer in size, I know different tyres and rims make varying sizes and depths but I can’t see it ever evening up looking at that pic

Same here, I spec’d the wheels and suspension on my regular bike expecting to be able to swap them with the ebike but there is no way the 29” rear will go into the chainstays of the ebike.

The tyre in the background looks pretty worn compared to the foreground. In my photo the smaller tyre is also pretty worn which may account for some of the difference between the two photos.

think depending on tyre choice it will work fine and at max it will slacken the head angle by about one degree and as Eckythump says rim width will also make a difference, a wider rim will flatten the tyre out a bit

This is how mine looked. Don’t gauge head angle on the photo though as I had also over shocked the rear taking it to 160mm rather than 140mm stock. The fork still at 150mm.

The Spectral:On is a good price at £4299 for the Spectral:ON 7.0 - it has Lyric, RS Deluxe shock, XT level components. Compared to the Scott E-Genius I tested today, which costs £4399 and has Recon, SRAM NX, budget shock, the Canyon looks very good value.

It's a decent value bike - my choice would be the 7.0 - but don't like the details around the DU and the battery. With the rough weldings, it looks like a prototype...
