Can a coil shock be fitted in the limited space within the frame

I'm hoping to fit a coil upgrade but I'm unsure there's enough space within the frame. Has anyone done this? Thanks in advance

Vitus advised that there is not, and there definitely is not room if you keep the plastic shock guard in place - however Adam Brayton has fitted one to his recently, so think it is possible - I am looking to do the same.

Sounds promising. Would be useful to know what set up he used. I guess it's going to be a case of limited coil size options

The standard Super Deluxe Trunnion on the bike is 205 x 62.5, and there aren't many coils out there in that size. The new Super Deluxe Coil is going to be available in that size, and I think you can get a Cane Creek DB and the MRP Hazard too.

I would speak to TF Tuned about it.

I'll phone a couple of suspension specialists in the morning and I'll post what I find out. Thanks for the video R120

Personally I still see fitting a coil as a downgrade for my riding on the E-Sommet.
But I love the set-up with the super Deluxe.
A coil shock for me would be less playful/progressive (less well suited to the leverage curve) and a fair bit heavier. But I can see fine well why others might disagree. Especially if maximum grip, and plowing through stuff DH are your main priorities.

Brayton's running an Ohlins so calling their distributor might make sense.

I am just keen to try one on it to see how it feels - tbh my riding style (and suspension set up) on the Sommet is geared more to going fast and keeping grip up, rather than boosting air.

Thanks Gary, I'll call the distributor tomorrow

Spoke to a guy at tf tuned this morning. Advised there were 3 options available. Ohlins, cane creek and one other new to market. Can't remember the name. Went for the ohlins as the manner in which it deals with compression in the mid range is superior to the other 2 when dealing with the additional weight of an ebike. Went for the ohlins coil as well as they come in 25lb increments and 525 was closest to what I needed. Super helpful guy and the shock will be here in a day or two. He said if there is any problem with the coil fitting then just sent back for a refund. I took off my shock and the measurements you need for the mountings are 8mm and 22mm if you want new. I'll ride a few times and post how it performs. Thanks to the guys who posted and made this process easy. Total cost of the shock and mountings was £814 and it arrives ready to bolt on. Cheers

Thanks that’s helpful - I think the other one my have been the Fast coil shock.

Do you know the spec of the shock?

Yes that's the one. I don't unfortunately, the tech ran through specs but I didn't write them down. He did say there was less adjustment on this shock but still an amount at least equal to the others as they don't include the fully open/fully closed options that in real world conditions aren't used. (often) The shock off the shelf isn't 205 x 62.5 but the tech is adjusting one to be exactly that.

So I fitted the coil shock on Friday, also put 2.6 magic Mary up front and a hans dampf 2.6 at the rear. Always thought the standard tyres on the vitus were a bit disproportional. I can say that the larger tyres combined with a 35mm stem have significantly improved the look of the bike, and the shock really sets it off.
Anyway, down to the important stuff and how it rides with the ohlins coil compared to the standard shock. The difference is night and day but for £800+ it should be. There were 3 things that stood out for me. 1) stones and roots no longer affect the bike, its buttery smooth. 2) I usually do drop offs up to about 2.5 feet and the comfort on the landing is a world apart. I went straight up to stile cop and did bigger drops than ever before as it was confidence inspiring. 3) the bike pedalled better, a lot better. I got out the saddle more and due to that it felt more like an acoustic mtb. I ended up getting a 525lb coil but after just one 3 hour ride I was pushing it so may need to up from the 525. All in all (for me) I can see no cons and I absolutely love the upgrade even if its on the expensive side..... But not as expensive as buying a specialized.

I'm actually blown away after just two proper rides by how improved by the subtle changes to damping and airspring curve the Super Deluxe on my 2019 bike is in comparison to the 2018 version,

That was my issue. The upgrades were subtle and I thought they needed to be far greater, hence the switch.

Stripping/painting the frame voids warranty on the entire bike (motor incvluded). I checked when I bought my 2018 and again 2 weeks ago. and a Warrantyless Ebike is not something I'd consider owning.
Mine is wrapped/taped with a mix of car vinyl black insulating tape and mastic 2228 tape.
not the most pro job but still looks better than that awful green and red.
WTF were they thinking there?

?

...But ran out of budget for the gold and hash leaf headbadge ;)
