Hi just a question about the motor cover on the Gen 4 motor , I removed it this morning and having done only 4 ride since I received it a week ago it's full of mud etc took ages to clean it especially around the electrical connections ,

I was thinking of glueing in some mesh on the upper holes on the cover to stop most of the mud entering obviously leave the holes underneath for water drainage , if the upper holes are for cooling purposes I'll not bother I just think by putting mesh on the upper holes it would stop a lot of shite getting in ? I've attached a pic of the 4 holes / vents I'm on about ?

Regards

These motors need cooling. I believe that by adding mesh to the vents they could be quickly clogged with even smaller particles. I don’t think cleaning would be easy either.
If you contact the designer of the skid plate for your type of bike they may have some solutions. Your mud may be different than their mud.

gone
I'd just leave it as is, It doesnt matter that the outside of the motor gets muddy, dirty etc.

Yeah true , I wish I'd taken a pic of the mud in the cover lol I suppose wet mud etc will still have a cooling affect on the motor ?

Yeah I suppose mesh will collect crap quicker , I suppose I'll just have to clean behind the cover on a regular basis

Cheers ?

I think we just have to drop the skid plate occasionally and give a thorough cleaning. However your mud seems to be a problem.
Maybe a deflector infront of the vents that wouldn’t interfere with cooling. (Like a fender thingy).?? Maybe mud likes you ???.

Maybe I was just surprised about the amount of mud etc sitting on the motor and electrical connections but they are designed hopefully to keep the shite out , something else apart from range anxiety I'll need to get over ?? ebike nooby ?

Does the Bosch really need cooling?

Many designs (including my Whyte) don't have any front facing venting whatsoever.
I have felt the motor after long climbs in the height of a UK summer and the casing is barely above ambient. ?‍♂️
Electrical motors generate heat. These motors are thoroughly tested to withstand these conditions otherwise the failure rate would be high. In my limited knowledge of electrical components, they don’t like extreme heat and extreme cold.(quickly and repetitively). In some cases this is unavoidable but can be mitigated with proper engineering. Outside factors can have a grave effect on these components. I’d like to ride my bike on Mars but I know it’s cold there. ?
