Bosch CX Race ltd motor failed at 230 miles

my Canyon strive on crf ltd motor has died at 230 miles
This is the CX race ltd motor , one day it was working fine the next day i got a flashing orange light , no dive and on error code 50100d.
BIke shop today confirmed it needs a new motor .
I read 2 other guys on the face book strive on owners group that had the same thing happen ,both under 300 miles .

Are we just unlucky or does the race motor not last very long ?
I asked if a could buy a spare race motor for when it fails again ,just so i dont keep being without my bike but bosch said no i cannot buy a spare motor and if i did get one and fitted it to my bike it would void the warranty of the original motor!
So it now looks like i need to buy a another bike to use for when this one is in for repair ,it has spent more time in the bike hsop than on the trails .
This is my secound Bosch e-bike and both have needed new motors ,they had so many error code ive lost count , my last ebike motor died at 1200 miles.
I have noving tried chipping or messing with them in any way

Are e-bike's just not very reliable or what ?

That's unfortunate and downright disappointing. As to the Bosch motors, we've sold a few Rails over 2 years and none of them have had any issue. One of them is a demo that has been abused, and it's still ticking. We're also a Specialized dealer, and we've had a few Brose issues.

I notice in another thread here that the "Bearing Man" with that motor rebuild business stated that he rated the Bosch motor to be generally more reliable and durable, but I guess nothing's perfect. My Rail 7 has had a VOLspeed tuner for quite awhile, and I ride in Turbo exclusively. So far so good. I know nothing about the "race motor", however, except what I've read here.

Hopefully the new motor will last a little longer .
It was in the shop last month as the connect module failed and the bike wouldn’t unlock , it was 3 weeks before Bosch sent out a replacement part .
I’ve just lost all faith in reliability now with Bosch .
I’m sure every make of motor has threads with someone having bad luck also .

@Pazman I have had two Shimano-motored bikes since Jan'19. The first an e8000 and currently an EP8. I have not had a second's worry with either. No funny noises, no error codes, nothing. I know that I am not the only one. There was no detectable play in the crankshaft bearings on the last bike (3500 miles) and none on this one (almost 3000m).

However, I do not ride through any water deeper than my crank axle. I do not jet wash, I do not even use a hose. I do transport my bike on the back of the car on a tow bar rack. I do that in all weathers because I ride all year round. I have not "chipped" or interfered with either motor in any way, mechanically or electrically.

Yes, I hate the fact that both Shimano motors were not designed to be maintained and that Shimano do not cooperate with anyone wanting to maintain them at home. (But they can be serviced by specialist operators).

I love the natural feel of the drive and that it always feels like me on a really good day.

There are members on here that have covered unbelievable distances on a single motor. (Use Search).

Pazman, I'll also add that all the emtb's in my area pretty much operate almost exclusively in the dry. It is west TX, so there's that. I notice you folks in Europe and especially in England seem to have to ride in some wet conditions if one wants to get plenty of riding done, and that is often a common element in motor issues...and not just Bosch.

Well funny you should say that as very ride I have been on has been wet , it feels like it hasn’t stopped raining here in the UK for 7 months now ha

DIY | eBike Motor Repair

I've just had my Brose rebuilt by ebikemotorrepair, and spoke with Michael the owner, unfortunately he says he is seeing Bosch Race motors failing, evidently a small gear is stripping out, Michael thinks the motor may have too much power for this gear? I just took delivery of 2024 Orbea Wild limited, with the race motor. I've gotten the yellow light several times, always standing still. Restarting always clears the yellow error light, but bummed to hear this, Bosch and Shimano have always been rock solid, Brose; 10 motors across three bikes, the 2021 carbon pro motors were failing between 250 and 400 miles each. Rebuilt Brose motor being is installed picking up bike today.

Just got mine back today with a new motor , I think Mike may have had an issue from as this one is so much quieter.
Great to back out on the strive on .

48 hour turn around from Bosch with the motor , very impressed

I get your frustration, but apparently failures across the brand spectrum aren't that uncommon. And, you did mention this is a race motor, so maybe that model is overdone beyond its reliability level...perhaps. That "Bearing Man" fellow who's associated with the motor rebuild business seems to rate the regular Bosch motor as maybe the most reliable overall, so it might be a little aggressive to state you'd avoid all Bosch products. It sounds like maybe the race version isn't ready for prime time.
