My son has an xduro allmtn but Haibike is unable to give a spec list because it's a special produced for the Italian market. My dealer is 1.5 hours away so I'm fed up driving over there to find out the simplest thing.
How do I determine exactly which shifter he has? Is there a code on the inside somewhere?
I assume I have to change the whole shifter even though only the barrel adjuster is broken?

Sorry, I should have said. Shimano Deore s11 are the only external markings. It fits on the brake lever but there seems to be more than one spec for this setup.

It looks much like the m5100 without display. But when I search online there seems to be more than one variant.
I also wondered if I could upgrade as this has only lasted a couple of months.

Any Shimano MTB 11 speed shifter will work even if it doesn't attach to the brake lever component. As you pay more you get better internals and features like multi change shifting.

But... What part of the barrel adjuster is broken? if you can remove the broken barrel adjuster and the threads in the shifter are ok you can fit a new barrel adjuster or one from another shifter. A new one can be ordered from your countries Shimano distributor through your LBS. But they may have a stash of broken parts to rob one from.

The area in red is worn smooth.

it doesn't matter.
The serated edge allows the adjuster to work as if it is indexed and with the aid of the spring also adds friction to the adjustment. But in reality it shouldn't turn on it's own even without the plastic piece and spring in place at all.

If it really bothers you you could always file the seration back or just purchase a new adjuster assembly. You certainly don't need to replace the whole shifter

Tom asked a bike mechanic to help him adjust the gears at a bike park he visited and he said he couldn't because the barrel asjuster was worn. I know little or nothing about bikes so I believed him.

The guy seemed really nice but as Gary kindly enlightened me, the serations are not neccessary at all.

Most shifters these days have their own barrel adjuster and many groupsets have done away with the barrel adjuster at the mech entirely. Even if the barrel adjuster at your mech becomes seized so long as your shifter has one you can still index the gearing by fine tuning cable tension at the shifter end
