Bafang Greasing PSA

All the Bafang mid motors I have had apart had a pitiful amount of lithium grease inside the gear case. I have found that John Deere Cornhead grease works really well. I have an M620 that is notoriously loud in stock form but after splitting the case and removing the little bit of factory grease and putting in a fat tablespoon of Cornhead it quiets it down alot and one would have to think making the motor more efficient as well.

Problem is that it only comes in a tube like that would fit in a grease gun but will provide a lifetime supply for you and your closest eBike buddies. I would wager to say that it would be a proper application in any gear reduction system.

Hey Mabman, thanks for the tip. Does opening the motor voids the warranty? What exactly is the grease type/compund of the one you are recommending? (I don't think I'll find the specific brand you mentioned in my country)

I don't think that it voids the warranty, at least whatever warranty there is for the M620.....One needs to fully remove the motor from the bike which does require a bit of care and the 16point cup tool to remove the chainring spider. Remember that it is left hand thread. Also it really helps to perform the removal with the bike upside down. Removing the plastic cover on the non drive side is easier also in this manner. Mine had phillips head screws and I replaced them with some socket head screws because they are easier to use as they are small and it affords a better grip on them for both loosening and tightening.

Once the motor is off the bike it is easy to remove the retaining bolts but take care prying the case apart so as to not spoil the gasket. New gaskets are available but if care is taken you should be able to keep it intact. As I said above remove any factory grease before installing the new. Here is a pic of the middling amount of factory grease:

I replace it with about 3 times as much as shown, I forgot to take a picture of it after re-greasing....

As far as the properties of the grease itself this is about the only info I can find:

As stated it is gear box specific and the way I understand it is that it thins out upon use but reverts back to a more solid form between uses? All I know is that my bike was much louder than my friends Yamaha motor especially when under hill climbing mode and now it is quieter and I can hear his over mine.

As far as availability in Chile I believe that John Deere is a global company that probably will have it available in South America? I got my tube from Amazon.

I'd not recommend using corn head grease anymore.. It's too thin and penetrates the torque sensor! Mine is already having issues and the bike of a friend went of flying due to this..

Put mine in a jar for safekeeping and maintenance for years to come!🤛

Mobilgrease 28 is the best grease to lubricate your nylon gear. This grease can be used to lubricate and grease the Bafang BBS01/02/HD motors. Mobilgrease 28 is specifically designed for aircraft parts and is nylon gear safe, it is red in colour. Mobilgrease 28 is used in landing gear wheel bearings, control systems and actuator screw jacks on aircraft. It is a polyalphaolefin synthetic base fluid with an organo-clay thickener and meets MIL Spec MIL-PRF-81322G. Another grease that meets this same specification is AeroShell Grease 22. It is amber in colour and would be an ideal substitute.

After 3,000 or so miles of CH use we have yet to experience this. I have seen instances of people installing way too much grease in their gear systems thinking that more is better but that is not the case I have found. More than stock certainly but putting too much of any type of grease in there is going to result in overflow? If you look at the pic above there is no gasket between the controller bay and the gears but I haven't seen any evidence in the motors I have split after use of contamination using the proper amount.

Using too much or too viscous a grease also creates drag and all that is needed with a proper grease is enough to coat the gears under use. If the grease thins while in use even less is needed. Systems like geared hubs and the Pinion system use an oil bath that doesn't require much but has service intervals because oil loses viscosity over time of use. Much like any vehicle does. Not sure how long a grease like CH will last but plan to keep an eye on it. I would imagine that the telling factor will be increased noise?

I also use Mobil grease 28 on BBS02 it is excellent. Well, I haven't covered about 6,000 km yet to lubricate the M500
