Back Pedal Tool - Chain Cleaning

I am 2 months into owning a Canyon Spectral:ON. I could not find a good way to back pedal to clean and lube the chain so I made the tool below.

The tool is a short piece of wood with two bolts thru it. I used a long carriage bolt which I wrapped with duct tape. This bolt fits in the center hole of the crank. The shorter bolt fits thru the chain ring and I used heat shrink to prevent scratching the chain ring. The scrap of 1/8 inch wood fits between the short bolt and the crank arm and you pull it out when you are done to make removing the tool easy. The picture below shows the tool assembled for use.

Hmmm . Good idea. My bike is usually in the work-stand but here’s another way. Nice!

Good idea thanks. Can anyone explain why you need to rotate the chain backwards? I have never understood why.

Got it now….I always clean and lube on a stand but that makes sense.

I just use velcro to strap the crank arm to one of the spider arms, seems to work ok
