I know I know .. I should buy the correct and obscenely expensive, designed for bike, magic €10 trainer sold for €299.99 ..

From the accurate documentary interview posted by @118 earlier, maybe sometimes that's a bit of a scam .. :)

Just say no to 29ers - EMTB Forums

OK, so like many here .. we're riding in the wet and it's crappy .. Your feet get wet .. I've been reading all the threads for months and keep looking at different 5-10's and sealskin options, but I've not convinced myself that any of them will actually keep my feet dry. I've experimented with my waterproof hiking boots and snow boots and various things and my feet get soaked in the first 3 minutes.

Last week I took the other half a cup of tea and threw on my wellies quickly to carry it round before heading off for a ride. In my eagerness I forgot to change my footwear, which I realised once I was out of the gate and got on .. "Feck , Ah sod it" .. so I set off anyway, expecting to come back two minutes later with restricted slippy feet.

Nope.

With my recent transition to Race Face Chesters (thanks to all for the recommendations).. My crappy wellies were glued ! 45k of slop later and I had dry feet ! OK, slightly warmer than normal and slightly sweaty, but not drowned and emptying half a litre out of my shoes at the end of the ride.

I rode the next day and did another 30k and they were great !

It might be that because they're crappy, they're more flexible than a more rigid pair ? And yes, I'm not (intentionally) doing back flips and other stunts, so maybe some of sensation could be lost and I'm unaware ..

Presently thinking of buying some "cycling" wellies .. something with a bit more toe protection, ideally a kevlar toe cap and maybe some extra sole support/protection as these are worn to about 2mm thick and aren't hugely comfortable/supportive through the sole.

Anyone else look like a douche and wear wellies to ride in ? Are some better than others ?

I've raced DH in seriously bad conditions in steel toe cap wellies. (wouldn't want to be pedalling very far in 'em TBH)
in proper mud or rain you probably want to wear overtrousers OVER them (Clue's in the name init?)
Most wellies tread and heel means they are actually too grippy for me

I rode with a cheap pair of Dunlop wellies over Jan-March this year and although they weren't well insulated, they kept my feet dry riding through loads of deep water, slop and snow. Two pairs of socks helped and some waterproof over trousers too, the grip on mine wasn't good as the sole had thick ridges so I found myself thinking about my feet more on technical descents but a pair with some stealth rubber soles would be a dream to have for the Scottish winter.
None of my riding buddies wear them and thought I looked like a complete wank however I didn't end up with trench foot after a 5 hour day on the bike.

Really? Even though they were popularised by 1st Duke of Wellington, before a certain country was even colonised...
Stop living in the past mate. Wellies are a stupid name for any boot. Gumboots!

And while we’re on the subject. Flip flops are called Thongs here in Australia. Your people may have invented these words, we perfected them.

Santa brought some waterproof socks to try .. so they'll get a go later with some boots .. Sadly, they cost more than Wellies, Sheep love boots, Gummy bear boots (catering to the international audience) ..

I think the search for "bike" wellies will continue .. wonder if they make "lab" wellies, so kevlar toe cap, protected sole .. and a none slip sole like a 5-10 .. I have some work trainers (toe cap bla bla) which have a sole which looks pretty similar to a 5-10 to my lack of knowledge eyes.

In a way I'm selfishly glad I'm not the only one suffering ! :) Somehow, through quantum pain sharing, I only feel as third as bad as I did ... who else looked ??? :)

5 10 EPS....plus waterproof overshoes. Warm and dry with Altura mtb trousers. (erroneously called pants by some!) Ps decent wellies cost more than 5 10s! ....you could try some GRUBS. Neoprene top so they dont flop about and super insulated. Chunky sole so a bit hit and miss with pinned pedals

I looked but I don’t know what you guys are on about. My search gave me a heap of pictures of naked ladies in “flip flops”

Tried it and i was soooooo good. The bike fashion police would have shot me on the spot... full rainwear and green hunting rubber boots. Grip was Surprisingly good! Two pairs of wollen socks... loved it!
