Anyone in Surrey climbed this?

I’ve tried to climb this path near Box Hill many times but always failed. I wonder if anyone has done it. Is it possible on an ebike? Total respect if anyone has. I got to where the red arrow ends on the map. You can see I didn’t get very far before the gradient chewed me up and spat me out on my entry level hardtail ?

I might have tried it, would have to check though - is it off the white hill car park?

Yes I know the one, with the steps going up on the right off Juniper?

I have been down but not up it, but will give it a crack now!

yeah that’s the one. From the bottom it looks possible but after 30 seconds of climbing I start to ask myself “what the hell was I thinking?” ?

It’s my local out the doorstep riding so to speak. Personally I would t bother making a special trip over - there are some decent trails but nothing really linked together, and it’s more XC riding than anything else - that’s why I drive over to Peaslake etc more often than not for a proper session.

Second attempt at this a couple of weeks ago on a Canyon Spectral On.

tried a zig zag strategy this time but fell off and pedal went into ankle. Eventually developed a leg infection. Needed hospital visit and pumped full of antibiotics. On the mend now.

I’ll admit defeat. Not trying this again ?

I had forgotten about this, might go try it tomorrow, though your experience is telling me not a good idea! Heal up

I made the mistake of heading up to the top of BH from the stepping stones hoping to be able to ride alongside the steps. Wet chalk is not great for grip and there were more steps than I expected but stubborn and got to the point of no return so nearly killed myself pushing, dragging and walk mode ing the bike all the way to Smith and Western at the top. Well done for trying

I don’t know the area at all but I’m keen to take a look.

What is the issue with this climb, steep/no traction/narrow/stamina?

Any/All of the above.

Southeners, Hodge! ?

I'm surprised they haven't called it a mountain, must be a couple of hundred feet...

(Only kidding guys!)
How's that little scratch on your knee, did you remove the stitches just using your teeth like a true northerner?

This is a shot of the steep section from Google Earth. Not a great photo but you can see the footpath steps. It doesn’t look too tricky from this?

There is a staircase next to it for walkers which goes all the way down. I’ll send a photo next time I’m there

Am I missing something here ?
The contour lines would suggest it's anything but " an insane gradient "
? Well, I can see a steep pinch just in front of his arrow, then there's a bit of reprieve before another steep pinch before the junction. True, we don't know the map scale or contour interval.

The overall gradient isn’t too bad, it’s the section to the side of the steps. If you know the famous zig zag road on box hill, where they had the Olympic road race, it’s basically going straight up the backside of that without the zigging and zagging to help.

Standard OS contour spacing is 50m if I recall from school? Follow the line along snd you’ll see it’s elevation noted.
Well spotted, but 5m intervals. We don't generally have standard countour spacing - 10 seems fairly common (Australia). If it was 50m that would be devastating! I'm guessing the map is 1:25,000?
