Anybody "downgraded" from a 12 to a 10 speed group?

Looking at the consumable parts of a 12 speed system, mine is a sram nx, has anybody replaced their groupset with a 10 speed because of the cost of cassette and chains the bikes go through?

Hi. I went from 11 X01 to 8 speed EX1 on a Kenevo. Cassette is expensive but you can replace smallest steel cogs independently to rest for about £20. Don’t miss the extra ratios on an e bike and should in theory put less stress on the chains with reduced chain angles. Despite EX1 being a robust design it is fairly light due to less speeds. X01 didn’t last that long before skipping on the smallest cog despite trying to look after chains and change regularly. Changed out of the robust GX cassette when I changed the hub.

Chains for EX1 reasonably priced. Have no experience with NX kit.

10sp Sunrace 11-46 with XT 12sp rear derailleur. Works great and cheaper/more durable than either Eagle or Shimano 11sp.

Thinking about going 10spd when my cassettes need changed (2x wheelsets)
Would probably go Zee/Saint mech/shifter and deore 11-36 cassettes. there's an 11-42 deore 10spd cassette too but a FR zee mech isn't meant to go higher than a 36t. Motor means I don't really need a 42t but will miss it when switched off. 36x36 is still low enough for fireroad climbing with the motor off.

Sunrace cassettes are shit. Avoid (especially for Eebs)

Went to SRAM GX 10 spd, short cage, with SRAM shifter and 10spd chain and SRAM 11-36 cassette. My normal riding area has turned FIVE 12spd mechs into junk in 8 months. I hope these last longer. I do miss a couple of gear ratios that suited my power curve but being in the perfect gear is less important on an eMTB.

I think you picked one of the guys who was running single speed ;)

Another incident where the low cage clipped a rock and bent enough to put the entire cage out of alignment where my spare parts wouldn't get it shifting correctly.

Tall grass catches in the low cog, which causes the chain to leave the cog. This stops the chain from moving and forward momentum snaps it like a twig.

Looks like the chain dropped behind the cassete, maybe the lower limit screw could be too loose.
I ride regularly on tall grass and never had this issue when grass reaches the cassete, what normally happens is that the tension pulley collects grass and the chain drags it up to the cassete.

I've had similar failures and few derailleurs that look fine, pass inspection on linkage, pivots, cage and still won't shift. I also ride in rocks, tall grass, twigs and such. The rest of the bike is up to it, even encourages it, the shifty bits, not so much.

Why hasn't somebody built a cover yet.... or at least build a short derailleur, like super short, and then put the chain take-up just behind the BB holding the chain up and pivoting in a direct to not explode at every little twig .

Personal derailleur count is 4 in about 6 months.

You are 100% correct on the issue. I've not found any solution that works for any length of time. I'm hoping the "short cage 10spd" stops the monetary bleeding.

Ouch! Starts to get expensive, eh?

Here's my box o shit so far. Lol. We need to take our short cage idea with our boxes-of -bits and build something the the industry hasn't been able to fix for..... seriously

You two ever considered erm... simply looking where you're going? and eh.. .you know.. .not mashing your rear mech straight into things?

I'm actually easy on equipment for the most part. I still have my 1998 125sx In excellent condition.

It's really the farm where I ride, the woods are haunted.

Honestly the place is littered with deer trails and razor trails, off chamber, rocky brush and thorns all over the place. Two creek beds that run the length of it. It's all quite slow, and I consider it technical though some might not.
Anyway, it eats derailleurs only.

I dont even get many flats.

My speeds are averaging about 12 mph and I have no jumps at all, except for a few rock ledges that empty out into the rock littered creek beds.
This is where I ride, day or night, and it's right out the back door.

Rohloff still needs a sprung tensioner that they'll no doubt blame for smashing itself into things

jus sayin'
