My daughter is growing fast, and has now moved up from her 20” wheeled Specialized RipRock, to a 27.5” Rockhopper. She looks ridiculous on it, but I’m sure she’ll grow into it soon.
Her immaculate pink Riprock is now going through ‘gender reassignment’ treatment (hope this doesn’t offend anyone
) and is going to turn blue so my boy can get the use of it.
I stripped it down completely (I got a BB removal tool after this photo) and have spent 20mins a night after work with it in the sandblaster.
It is now free of any pink paint / white undercoat, and is back to bare metal.
I have then spent an hour or so washing it with degreaser to get all the contaminants out. All parts are plugged up / taped off ready for spraying.
I’ve never really sprayed anything important before… but figure if I make a backside of this, I can strip it down again and put it to one of the powdercoaters we use at work.
I bought some rattle cans from Specialist Paints… so have a primer (white), a base coat (white), followed by a blue Spectracoat (basically a blue flip paint) and then a 2k clear coat.
I’ve built myself a wee spray booth at work out of an old crate and some cardboard, and have hung the forks up ready for spraying. I’ll test my ability on the forks, as there’s less to strip back if it all goes wrong!
According to the tins I need 1-2 coats of primer, 2-3 of the base coat, 2-3 of the Spectracoat, and 2-3 of the clear coat.
I’ve watched various videos and read guides, which tell me I need to wet / dry sand with a 600+ grit paper… but
my question is how often? Should this be between every coat?
The paint indicates I can apply the second / third coat after 15 mins each… but if I’m sanding it between every coat, this may take some time!!
Appreciate any tips / pointers that can make this a success!!
