Well thanks to all of you who have responded in such a positive way and I accept the moderators comments.

This thread was started in a somewhat lighthearted way to see what kind of response it would generate after I had read a couple of grizzly posts by some guy telling somebody else ( effectively) he didnt know his a**e from his elbow.

If it only helps remind us that we are all different, with different perspectives, experiences and competences and to accept them, it was worthwhile- at least for me? Thanks all.

Hey @Levo19 - don't be ..... Questions are for asking. Even though some may get a jab in, many others are happy to answer the same question many times ..... realizing some people just don't do forums well. The trick is to not get thin skinned about it when they do.

As far as being knowledgeable goes, I always go by I was always taught that when one stops learning they stagnate My grandpappy used to say .... Nobody knows everything - just look at some wealthy guy working in a bank or a brokerage 12+ hours a day and always stressed, then look at the village idiot in the corner ....... That idiot, more often than not knows how to be happy and happiness makes up for a hell of a lot.
Being honest, N+1 usually makes me happy


Oh, and I am well as my beaten old body can expect to be. Never thought I would make it past 30 and damned near didn't make 20, so the past 44 years have been a bonus. Had a 20k brunch ride yesterday and hit the Rotovegas trails with @Duke916 for a pretty awesome 50km ride I am happy as a pig in muck

That's good to hear... I've got 3 years on you and feel it somedays... I rode my levo switched off for 25kms today... silly idea.

Did enough of that last weekend on my Scott. Riding the Avanti pig today I was in no way inclined to abuse my 63 year old body with that bullshit. Need to chek the weight, but without battery it is 7lbs heavier than @Duke916 alloy Levo.

my biggest gripe with this forum is when someone asks a simple question then the reply is that person being belittled or ridiculed really pisses me off, there is one person on this forum that I cannot stand.. and I would reply to him in person like i do on this thread...it's not only my replies that are ridiculed but almost everyones.. he brings out the worst in me and I haven't bothered with this forum of late because of it... I remember when I first joined thinking who is this knob? there are a few others who seem to get off on being "superior" but aren't near as bad, anyway like I've posted once before, we should be able to come here and ask a question without being made feel inferior... I have looked like a total dick with my aggression towards one person in particular, however most on here are ok..... and WTF does "hot lips in memory" mean???

I think part of it is the culture you were raised in, and I don’t mean a particular ethnic culture, but the societal culture of your particular childhood. I was born, and spent the majority of my adult life in Santa Cruz, Ca. Dripping sarcasm and demeaning comments were part of our culture, but never with actual intent or a mean spirit. I had a good Irish lad tell me once, “In Ireland, you give it and are disappointed when the other side doesn’t give it back”. I think I would love Ireland.

Was working as a chef to help fund my budding pro motocross career when I had an industrial accident. 80% burns with 30% full/partial thickness. Back then usually anything over 20/25% was fatal as they could not keep you hydrated and infection was also a huge issue. A couple local surgeons were world leaders in the field and had developed some new techniques & a really good cream that not only kept air and infections out of the wounds but also helped keep moisture in. 1 month in a coma, 2 in intensive care and 6 more in hospital with another year of work. Dr would not sign a relase to let me obtain a race licence as he felt the grafts would always be an issue. They still reckon the only reason I survived was my fitness level and pure determination. Played some social soccer in my early 20's then got serious for a year or two before employment intervened. Never made it to the GPs but was able to ride again in my mid 30's and made it back to the Pro ranks in my 40th year only to find I didn't bounce any more. Bicycles came along tghe following year for rehabilitation and MTB shortly after.

Thanks for sharing. Just curious, was there a turning-point for you? Maybe there’s nothing you could can point to but the whole event is inspiring to me. A caregiver, a goal, family, some moment?…or that could be private.

I guess I was focused. When I came out of the coma, day after day I started with a saline bath as they washed the cream off and removed dead skin. After a week or so I was able to hold some tweezers and was helping. This was around christmas and I was telling the nurses I would be out of there training to get back in shape so I could take up the contract I had been offered. It wasn't until I was about to be released to stay at home overnight when the surgeon told me he would not sign a release. I guess if he told me earlier it probabl;y would have really put a damper on my recovery. Funnily enough, after I was able to return to work I went back to the kitchens and spent near 20 years in the hospitality trade. I did however spend much of my career as a prep chef and later doing catering - a lot of corporate hospitality for Super Rugby, A1 GP, A,mericas Cup and stuff like that. Now coming up to 20 years in IT next year.

One thing I will say - morphine is bad shit.

the scarring must be terrible, you poor bugger, you have your life, and when you are fighting for your life im thinking the scarring wouldn't even be an issue... I'm sorry everyone if I sound ignorant of the subject, but I can't fathom it.

Nowhere as bad as I was fearing. The quality of care at Waikato was world class back then and except for bald areas on my legs and feet it is difficult to see unless looking closely. Being a hairy bugger makes those kind of stand out, but in many other areas the hair actually covers lots of scars here& there.

As a toddler I did the boiling kettle trick , and as a teenager some moron decided a firecracker was a good way to melt my undies - so I hate to think how much you overcame with your burns. Burns ward staff are heros.

Well that conversation took a left turn. Respect to all involved! I've heard that burns can be some of the worst and most painful injuries. Puts other issues into some perspective.
