Turn the battery on and immedietly after hit connect on the E-Tube app. That's the only way I can get connected. Also you could use STunlocker which is actually better for changing assist levels. It's only £1.49

The info will be in the manual that came with the bike.

Thanks for this.
Does STunlocker void the warranty?

I'd say no, as the same configuration can be done with the PC dongle. (as long as you only alter the assistance, no power increase or speed unlock)
Thanks.
I cant get the etune app to properly connect.. I mean, it connects but then it just sits there for ages with the wee wheel logo spinning, until the the battery times out and switches off.
So I've got no firmware updates.
I will try STunlock.

Was the same for me on android (pixel). Worked with iphone though.

If you have a tablet you can try that app, it also has diagnostics and shows battery health and cycles.

I have been able to connect my Android phone, default, and also iPad.

So..
I downloaded Etune onto my Lenovo tablet.
Successfully connected.

Updated 4 bits of firmware and was half way through updating the system ... when it told me that I lost connection.

Asked me to restart.

I tried.

Switched the battery off at one point, thinking, "I will start again from the beginning.

Bah. Now I cant get the wee computer unit to turn on.

Help.

So, the fab people at Biketrax in Edinburgh have confirmed that the connection dropout during the updating of the system has indeed corrupted the the BIOS of the Shimano steps 8000 on the wee computer chip.
If I had realised that this was going to be such a risk I obviously would not have attempted it.
So here is the clear advice:

Get the updates done by a Shimano approved bike dealer through their hard wired connections. Don't do this stuff by bluetooth unless you want to risk the complete breakdown of the system.

Im now awaiting the bikeshop electro mechanic's communication with Shimano and their guidance through a possible re-installation of firmware.
Of course I will have to pay for their time, which is a waste of time since I could have simply got them to plug and play if I had known.

My suppliers (e-bikes direct) are brilliant, and are asking Merida for a replacement chip, hopefully under warranty... since I acted in good faith and this problem is unanticipated and not reasonably warned about.

Merida cant do a replacement.
It has to come through Shimano.

So...

I've had no problems uploading app and connecting to both my E8000 and E7000 on his iPhone and mine on android.
The connection simply depends upon your signal, and bluetooth, I guess. My android phone is Samsung 9, so getting on a bit now.

The issue I had was with attempting to update the system, not adjusting the power bands.
