First I've heard of inspections or fines, besides folk riding escooters without helmets on the pavement in the CBD of Sydney (don't do that, folks). Certainly haven't heard of anything ebike reg enforcement related on the grapevine up here in Newcastle. I only spot a few that are obviously derestricted.

99 Bikes AUstralia backed by VIP's are apparently negotiating with the ACCC. We are hoping for a favourable outcome. I am presuming it’s all about the manufacturers warranty support. The was a vote on this and other forums which has been deleted by admins that had relevant information needed. We suggest that everyone complies to the rules as they will be conducting random checks leading to fines and bikes been confiscated.
Old post . Still ridiculous. Police don't even no what an e bike is .

Backed by VIP's, right.... And what has the ACCC got to do with any of this?

Tasmania has released a consultancy paper to lift restrictions to 32kph and also introduce speed pedelec class :)

I have all my Ebikes with adjustable tunes, so I can have them de-restricted or not. I actually prefer this to them raising the speed limit to 32kph.

My concern with the raising speed limit to 32kph, is EMTBs will then be excluded for using certain trails, as the Karens complain about Ebikes going too fast.

The 25kph limit is a huge PITA. But the world we live in is one where laws are made for the lowest common denominator. So I'd prefer that EMTBs are allowed everywhere a bicycle is allowed, than a faster EMTB that is no longer considered a bicycle when looking at where it can be ridden.

Australia leads the world in 'nanny legislation' including helmet laws which stifle bicycle uptake. Look at EU, Japan, China, SE Asia where cycling dominates transportation. I don't wear a helmet and Police are too busy doing domestic violence call outs, around 80% of their workload than enforcing helmet laws.

I caught a tree limb just above the forehead yesterday. Big dent in helmet. Foam cracked on the inside. Whilst I stopped and was a little shaken up. I continued riding and end result I was fairly unscathed. New helmet ordered.

I would be nursing a huge gash on the head and god knows what else, if I didn't have a helmet on. It has nothing to do with helmet laws that has me wearing a helmet, when riding an EMTB on forested trails.

Here's the helmet. That crack is better in the helmet, than in my head.

You only need a helmet when you need it, you only need a seat belt when you need it. Personal responsibility is up to each of us based on risk and yes, if I was riding high risk situation, I would wear appropriate gear. Good to hear it worked for you... in that situation.

I hope you weren't doing over 25 kph !

if I was riding high risk situation,
It wasn't high risk. It was just a single track I have ridden many times over many years. Not sure why I didn't see the tree limb. I was following another rider. Maybe I was distracted by him.

No idea. When climbing and descending single track forest trails, I only monitor my heart rate zone colour when riding. Not my speed. You just ride at a comfortable speed. I doubt we achieve speeds above 25kph. It just too twisty weaving in and out between the trees.

When we get to the double track fire trails. Most of guys are on MTBs and we easily do more than 25kph. But there's no over hanging branches, as the fire trail has been cleared.

Agree. Each to their own. But if you go riding without your helmet, and the situation changes or isn't what you expected. It's normally too late to fetch your helmet.

I've gone out expecting a dry grippy ride. Only to find some rooty sections still a little damp. And front wheel slipping on roots is an easy slip that puts you on the wrong line, and into one of those risky situations.

I'm old and cannot afford to take head knocks. I'm ok for cuts and bruising elsewhere. But happy to wrap my head in foam.
