Stopped into a Trek owned company store yesterday to pick up a spare chain ring nut and noticed they had about 20 new Rails of various models on the floor. Guess the supply chain has opened up some. What I found interesting is that all the new bikes now have significant more space between the chain stay and chain ring. This is a nice change as anyone who's had a chain ring nut come loose knows.

What a pile of damage that can cause. The chain ring is so close (2020 model)….very little room for movement.

As a side note: when I asked if they had a chain ring nut the sales person looked at me and said what's that? Pointed it out on a bike, they came back and said they'd have to contact Bosch to get a part number and didn't have one. There's three large Trek owned stores all within 10 miles of me, but they cycle through employees like water. There's truly a lack of knowledge in the eBike world. Not very confidence inspiring. There's another independent dealer located in the middle of all these company stores whom I need to start supporting more.

Yup, I hear ya. Our LBS (Trek) is not too bad. When I purchased our eMTB’s I questioned them a lot (Not quite an inquisition) on their abilities for eBike maintenance.
There is also another LBS that carries high-end MTB accessories only. So I spread the love ❤️ $$$.

Looking into the updated 9.8 and found this very interesting in the 2022 Rail FAQ. Didn't see this mentioned in Rob's 9.9 excellent review.

Are software updates still required to be performed at the retailer?​
No. The new Bosch smart system will do updates “over the air.” The new Rail with Bosch smart system is
regularly upgraded with new functions and always remains up-to-date – thanks to updates via the eBike
Flow app.​
How often will over-the-air firmware updates be scheduled? Can riders revert back to a previous
version if they don’t like the update?​
There will be multiple firmware updates per year. Updates on bug fixes and improvements in system
efficiencies cannot be reverted. Some updates on feature changes are reversible, for instance, riders
have the ability to revert from having eMTB mode back to the standard four support modes.​
Is there an app with the new Bosch smart system?​
Yes! The Bosch eBike Flow app gives both iOS and Android users access to numerous functions,
integrates other apps such as Apple Health and synchronizes activity data automatically. The Flow app
can now easily receive updates 'over the air' keeping your bike and app always up-to-date and with the
latest features.​
Does your phone need to be physically connected to the bike to take advantage of the features?​
No. Get on, start pedaling and the smart activity tracking of the eBike Flow app is activated — regardless
of whether the smartphone is in your pocket or attached to the handlebars. Thanks to the in-pocket
feature, you can keep your cockpit reduced to the essentials.​
Is there any Trek customization within the eBike Flow app?​
Yes. The eBike Flow app can recognize your Rail bike, customize the app display and help you find local
Trek retailers. In addition, there will be additional features unique to Trek in the future. Your over-the-
air app updates will include these features.​
Can I customize the assist levels within the eBike Flow app?​
Yes. The eBike Flow app offers user-defined assist modes. Support-percent and support dynamic can be
adjusted, while speed and max torque can be reduced (useful where speeds are restricted or with new
riders that need to build experience at lower speeds/torque).​

I ran into the same dilemma in trying to get info about putting a coil shock on my '22 Rail 5; they claim they can't tell you anything unless you bring the bike, physically, into the store which makes no sense to me. Also, they told me that a 625wh battery, which is standard on the 7 on up series pre-2022, wouldn't fit my Rail 5, which came with a 500wh battery. That was simply not true, the 625wh pops right in no issue. So, yeah, tons of inexperience. But it's somewhat understandable since the store chain grew so fast.

I'm getting a battery 603 error "Please contact your bosch dealer" so took the bike under warranty to my local Trek store. Everyone in the store was clueless. They were nice but clueless. Asked me to come back when the bosch guy is around (Thursday). I asked if I could buy a 2nd battery and they were all even more confused. Said I would need to come back when they had time to look at all the parts required to make a complete 2nd battery. I don't really think they knew what they were doing but they said the batteries are back ordered 3 months at least and the covers are impossible to source in purple phaze.

They had three 2022 9.8XT's on the floor in large. I got to sit on one and did notice the reach is longer than my 2021 model. Not one of the sales guys knew what the differences were between the 21 and 22's. I don't think I'll buy a Trek again. Expensive, hard to get parts and dealer only and LBS aren't really very good.
