2020 Rockshox Lyrik 150mm 2.0 rct 2 Select Plus Lower leg Service.

Hi All,
Lock down boredom encouraged me to carry out the 2021 air shaft upgrade abs lower leg service. I was surprised to find very little suspension oil in the lower legs and the wiper rings were dry on one half segment of the ring. This fork is fitted to my Whyte RS-150 I bought new in July 2020.
Anyone out there come across this situation where the fork lube in new forks has been less than perfect and not to the recommended service manuals

Not personally but it's not unknown for this to happen. I know ppl don't like paying more, but TF Tuned strip and check to everything they sell, seems worthwhile, when you hear of cases like this.

I knew TF Tuned offered that service but I thought it was a bit of an over kill...

Recommended amount is lube in each leg is 10ml (two teaspoonfuls) not exactly a huge amount as it is. Did mine a couple of months after buying the bike and seals were pretty dry as well.
First ride after service is amazing, can’t beat a good bit of lube. Remember not to skimp on the SRAM butter/Slick honey.

I finished the rebuild this morning and the forks feel very smooth,
Need the restrictions to ease so as to test proper up in the hills

just back from a play in the woods, nothing too technical but loads of annoying roots of varying shapes and sizes and loose and broken hard pack. The fork performed brilliantly I honestly didn’t thin the seal head mod and a good service would transform the performance of this fork in such a way.
I removed the bottom out bump stop on the air shaft (gained an extra 10mm travel) and added two bottomless tokens
What I would do differently on the next service is change the rings below the seals. I cleaned them with IPA, they expanded so I found it difficult to get them back in and seated properly but hey ho that’s experience for you.

Never felt the need to clean them in ipa. I just let them sit in fresh oil while I clean up the rest of the fork. They are a pita to get to seat though once they’re heavy with oil. TBH if they are dirty enough to need a good clean then it’s probsbly time to replace them anyway. If you don’t ride in the wet a lot and keep up with the lower services then they last ages.

that isn't a bottom out bumper. It's a top out bumper.
By removing it you'll have increased top out "clunk" and reduced the durability (and increased the possibility of damaging) your airshaft seal head. You'll also have unwittingly changed the forks negative/positive spring volumes and made the air curve more linear. (pretty stupid if you're running 2 tokens)
Why on earth didn't you buy a 10mm longer airshaft if you wanted to increase travel?

I fitted new foam rings today, wasn’t happy with the way the old ones were seated, happy now.

Yesterday I finally got up into the hills for the first time in weeks and the first time to ride the upgraded Lyric in anger.
I rode in the Simonside hills above Rothbury in rural Northumberland (a short drive from where I live). There is a decent from up and along from Chartners to Hepple Whitefield farm some of you on this forum will know it.
It’s quite long 2 ply, very mixed surfaces, very fast, loose, a couple of sharp turns, varying gradients and loads of natural kickers, not large but when hit at speed hugely entering.. the fork performed magnificently the difference is hard to believe. So smooth in operation and small bump compliance excellent. The fork definitely sits higher in it’s unweighted state.
this small inexpensive seal head mod together with a through lower leg service has transformed the way my Whyte E-150 RS rides.
I would throughly recommend this mod to anyone running this fork.
My set up......
74 psi air chamber
27% fork indicated sag setting
3 bottomless tokens
Total riding weight 93kg.
