I'd like to buy a Turbo comp for my wife. I can get a 2020 model for around €800 less than a 2021 model which is a lot of money for me right now. I'm happy with the SRAM components and specs of the 2020 but I'm concerned whether the motor is as reliable. My research suggests a 2020 may even be preferable for the additional 2 year warranty over the 2021 model. Is it stupid to buy a 2020 model if 2021 is available?

Have you looked at other brands? I bought my Liv for about €2000 less than the 2021 Turbo Comp, and am loving it. The spec is really nice as well, and depending on your wife´s bike size, you might be able to find the 2020 in stock for even less than what I paid - I think size S was still available in some places - this is the bike I got: Intrigue E+ 1 Pro - 625WH (2020) | Mujeres Trail Bici | Liv Cycling España, paid 10% less than the advertised price here

If you´re set on the specialized, and is ok with the specs, I wouldn´t pay 800€ more just for a newer engine, unless the engine had some major performance differences... but that doesn´t seem to be the case, according to this article the 2020 and 2021 motors are the same: Specialized Turbo Levo 2021: Novedades y precios

Unless there is something about the 2021 components that your wife just has to have, I would jump at the 2020. I'm extremely happy with my 2020 Comp and would much rather have the 4yr warranty than the different (but IMO basically comparable) components. BTW the motors/batteries are the same model between them, other than the build dates. Motors built after about spring of this year have the reliability update(s). If your 2020 motor fails (which mine did) they will swap it out under warranty with the new 2021 spec motor.

If it were me I'd go for the 2020 with extended warranty (in fact thats what I did do) - the major failures of ebikes (which cost the most to replace) are the motors, so an extra 2 years is never a bad thing in my book. Spend the Spare 800 on some upgrades of your choice and a night away with the wife to make her even happier!

Same motor, in fact quite a few people are reporting 2019 motors in 2021 model bikes.

If the components dont bother you, then yes, jump all over the 2020. When the motor blows up, youll have the 21 motor.

I love the components of the 21 over the 20, nice to have choices! If I were in your shoes, and it was for my wife, I'd go with the 20.

And if any of the components really do bother you, you could apply the savings and swap them out and still end up with double the warranty.

I'm confident that if the motor isn't fixed, the 21s will get the better warranty as well. So that wasn't a factor for me.

Depends on your personal values, and €800 euros ..... Id always buy the latest and greatest, everything is an improvement with time, and the warranty is irrelevant --- until something goes wrong. You need an actuary to measure the value of that.

Of course if cash-is-king then buy something much cheaper (and allegedly better value,) I don't accept that of course... Speciazed is the best imho, and, no, I do not have the experience to compare. Very few do , despite the claims here and elsewhere!!!
