2020 Merida E-One Sixty 10k Issue

Newbie here !

My brand new E-One Sixty 10k will not turn on. I've not even been taken it out for a ride yet and although it did turn on as normal when it arrived, now it seems to died on me.

When holding the power button down it just flashes green, it does this with or without the battery connected.

I've checked the batteries on my other Merida, checked all cables and I can't find an issue any where.

Any thoughts ?

I have no experience of the E160 but I understand it comes with 2 batteries. Assuming the bike will not switch on using either battery and both batteries are charged...and appear OK if the charger is attached to them off the bike.........the most likely problem area is the battery to bike connection. So I suggest you check the connection pins.

1. There's a small secondary battery in the power button that may have gone flat or is reacting to the cold. If it is the bike won't start. If it is then you can start the bike by removing the rubber plug below the bottle mounts and starting the bike by inserting something and pressing the power button on the bike battery through the hole in the frame (5mm allen key perhaps but not something sharp.) . EMTB Videos did a Youtube video on this. If this starts the bike than take it for a ride to allow time for the little battery to recharge from the main one.

2. I had this issue today and it turned out that when adjusting my headset yesterday I had caught the cable that runs from the motor to the display and crushed it. (It's a STUPID design. Stop running electronic cables down the headset FFS!). I fixed my cable (I'm handy with a soldering iron) and the bike is fine. Symptoms were identical to what you're seeing. If that's what you've done repair or replace the cable.

3. Check the connectors are properly inserted at the controller. Loose motor to display cable will disable the bike. If you have the new EP8 motor do NOT pull on the cables. The new ones are very thin and fragile compared to the older ones. Use a pair of needle nose pliers and grasp the connector not the cable. Re-insert until you hear a click.

Try these. for starters. It's probably no.1 as this happens occasionally with new Meridas.

Interesting. The OP said the power button was flashing when he held it in. Completely unrelated but there are other devices that do that to signal battery below required voltage. Sounds promising!

it gets charged by the system? Or is it just a lithium flat battery?

I'm guessing it's charged by the main battery during use based on what Gordon said.

Surely the manual tell you one way or another? It is a Shimano part rather than Merida specific so others with the same top tube power button must know something a bout its operation.

No, nothing. No reference anywhere I could see and a local shimano service specialist didn't know either.

The EMTB videos video referred to in the post above does seem to confirm that it is charged by the battery but if that is the case it makes no sense to me why it should go flat on a new bike and you have to resort to using the battery on/off switch. In the EMTB video he infers the on off switch would not work due to very low temperatures, but I suspect it is a darn sight colder where he is than here!!

Found it....page 28. It is charged via the battery and it tells you how to charge the on/off switch battery.

It happens on new bikes because the little switch battery doesn't get enough charge from the factory (remember the main battery shuts down after 10 minutes if you don't ride the bike so the little battery doesn't get any charge time at the factory.) Your first big ride fixes that.

You don't need no stinkin' Shimano specialists. We ARE the stinking Shimano specialists... This forum has been the no 1 resource for me on all things Merida and Shimano STEPS. Every time I've needed advice on a part number or fitting instructions, I've found it here. Generally the bike manuals are fucking tragic and a few well known Youtube channels make up some astonishing bullshit (especially about batteries). What Rob's built here is a truly astonishing resource on emtb tech, repairs and upgrades.

The manuals that come with the bike are useless. However the various Shimano manuals you can download from Shimano (basically what Mikerb provided) are quite good and provide torque, detail assembly and troubleshooting details. Most Merida bike PN's can be found on the Merida catalogue archives although this is not that easy to find online. As a minimum, the bike manuals should at least give you the various links.
