I know what you mean, some places can be hard to get to stick to the frame, usually it's over tight places, when I apply it and it's almost dried I go over the edges with a hairdryer and firmly press then down, that usually works for me, there are also places I've had to trim it with scissors to...
I've always used Invisiframe but any good wrap should be fine, as for mudguards I've just fitted a small one from Sico MTB and love it, they make them bespoke for each frame, neat and reasonably priced too.
