I think they are one of the best looking MTB shoes out there, wish more companies did both hi tops and more colour ways. Mind you my Adidas Trailcross's might be a step to far :

I didn't know mtnb shoes was a Thing . Well kinda I suppose u want light w a kinda hard shell . To protect from rocks and shit . And I suppose they gotta look good too . So u can pull chicks on ur way form somewhere too your bike .

Actually dedicated MTB shoes for flat pedals, whilst they might have additional protective features, are primarily about the sole and the extra grip they provide on the pedals, along with usually being stiffer soled. You don't have to go down the dedicated shoe route, as some riders don't like too stiff a sole, which is where you see the people using Vans and the skate type shoes.

I would say whatever shoe you use, you want one with a flat sole, to maximise grip on the pedals, and dedicated shoes really come into their own in crap conditions.

For winter use on the moors I've used the O'Neals Loam shoes as they are waterproof and warm, and have a fairly grippy sole for hikerbike moments.
Shimano MTB shoes have vent holes which allow water in and I don't want to try to undo muddy laces.
However in summer I usually just use a pair of trainers that have a firm sole .

Those Giro's look good (although I'm not sold on the color if I'm honest). Looks like make big sizes too for those of us with barges for feet. Need to get something better than approach shoes.

How do the Giro's come up on sizing? Are they true to size, tight or generous? Largest they have on the UK website is 48 which is sometimes OK sometimes not for me...

I'm 44.5 so had to go 45 as no half sizes but ok , they r wide fitting in my opinion so they suit my hooves ! Good for some thicker socks next winter.

I like the fit of the giro, they are on the comfort side- true to size.

I've been using my Specialised Rockhopper shoes that I bought sometime in the '90s. So long ago I actually have no memory of ever buying them except that it coincided with the purchase of those red Shimano DX flattie/Spud pedals.

However, just two weeks ago, I got myself some Northwaves with velcro fastenings, so I don't have to bend over so much putting shoes on and tying laces. 2 pairs of shoes in 3 decades ... keepin' the market floatin'.

Yah, the '90s Specialised ones. Still good shoes and have lasted well considering the use they got. Just a little difficult to get on and off these days.
