A simple check that can improve braking power and feel is to see if the brake rotors are centred in the caliper. With the bike stationary watch the rotor very carefully as you apply the brake. If you can see the rotor move at all, it is not centered, and even a few mm can make the brake feel less direct. Adjustment is provided by slotted fittings to the frame posts so easy to do in theory but takes a little time to get it just right both at the front and back of the caliper.
