Higher end mountain bike gear shifters don't tend to have gear indicators, they are mostly found on fairly low end gear shifters.

Nothing to do with high end componentry or Ebikes.
Shimano shifters have removable gear indicator windows. From Altus/acera all the way through to XT.
SRAM don't

Do you know why this is?
No idea, but if I had to guess it could be because the gear indicator will limit the ability to position the shifter on the bar, that and once you have a reasonable amount of experience you don't need to look at an indicator to know what gear you're in.

Ha, always thought it was just the cheaper end that had indicators, but there you go you can get them for xt shifters
