Stock update:

  • Some VRX due to arrive next week
  • VRS due w/c 16th October
  • VR due w/c 23rd October
Looks like CRC are dropping the price significantly too!!
Very very tempted by the VRX, instead of paying £900+ for the Whyte e160S MX I was looking at.
Thoughts??

I have focus sam2 also and it has domain in front (charger and luftkappe tuned) and it feels a bit different compared to zeron. Now i should then service the fork in local bike shop. I have a good luck and one of the best fork tuning shops are in the same town. www.fillariosa.fi Now rczshop was selling coil shock 60 euros! 205*62.5 trunnion, so I will swap forks and coil shock (it a bit short i know) and lets see how it feels.

RCZs offer is tempting, but I decided not to buy one, because of the missing adjustable compression. Don't know if it is possible to upgrade that. Maybe you don't need it, if you give it to your tuning company.
The stroke should be relatively easily to change to 65mm by removing a spacer.

For those of you who do not know RCZ, please check their philosophy first and then order something. It is mentioned on their website. They are "special".
And do NOT pay by Credit Card. It is not safe.

Went short spin today with focus jam2 it's also in mullet and 160/150 suspension set up. Bosch engine and it felt really nice, no race mode so this "afterburner" is missing. Last weekend I got 580W out from bafang in uphill, so I don't now which motor is better, a bit different approach.

Credit card is the safest way of paying, it gives you the most protection.

Not at RCZ. There is a high chance that their Shop Software is compromised and your Credit Card Data will be misused. In another forum many people had unauthorized debits or attempts at debits after the had used their Card at RCZ.

I wonder if this is a genuine Bafang battery? It has no markings that I can see but it says it fits. Makes me a little leery. I guess the best thing would be to contact one of the Aliexpress venders and see if they can get just a battery.

Does any one know it RCZ ships to the USA? I can't find any info and every time I try to purchase something it only gives me 3 country choices.
You have to click "Other Countries" top right and select USA first.

My Fox 38 just arrived from them. I paid by Credit card, but I setup a virtual card to pay with only the right amount of money available on the virtual card. Came in about 5 days !! Well packed.

They seem to have ROCKSHOX Fork LYRIK SELECT+ RC 29" DeBonAir 170mm BOOST 15x110mm Tapered Black for €269.99 which is tempting as that might keep all the angles roughly the same on my 27.5 Specialized Kenevo Gen 1 which I've been tempted to try mulleted and the loss of 10mm travel might not be noticeable. The Charger RC 2.1 kit for my stock 180mm Yari is more than their whole fork

Yup .. I did do a post on fork options and prices, couldn't the lyric to link it when I looked when I did the post though !

Juts put a 170 29' Fox 38 on it to replace the temporary 180 27.5 Lyric on it ..

Screenshot 2023-10-05 17.11.31.png

Sits about 5cm higher than the 27.5 fork with 27.5 wheel !!!

Probably more where it's designed to be ! Only been around the garden, but feels great so far ! The TRP's with the 2.3 disks also feel better than with the XT Ice Tech disks, though still not quite as nice feedback as XT/Zee's. Just going for another quick play .. don't have much time tonight unfortunately.

Had to visit the LBS this afternoon for a crown race and star nut .. €5.30 ! so gave him 10 and said buy a beer .. It's going in tomorrow to have it's motor bolt tension officially checked as per the request from Bikester.

Was also going to swap out the bar and stem for a 35mm loamlab stem and 35mm carbon bars I had lying around (the display fits both sizes of bars, you just remove the inner rubber spacer for 35mm. The stock ones weighed in at 472g. The Fancy loamlab CNC stem and carbon bars 414g. So for 58g I decided to leave it as it is as I like the feel.

The 38's have far far better small bump compliance than the Lyrics and so far just seem super smooth off anything. Maybe not quite as poppy as the Lyric's.

Battery hasn't been charging for a couple of days so just took it out. Randomly rotating the charging cable seemed to get it started, so possibly the connection has crap in or isn't a very good connection.

It doesn't look the same physically. Different connections, looks physically taller. I think the E-mythique is 36v too.

Doesn't matter, a credit card has the most protection out of all the payment methods. You are covered against fraud.
You also don't lose 'your' money, as it's the card providers money. You don't pay for what you don't receive.

Which is one of the most unsafe methods, very little if any protection once you've sent money.
In general you are absolutely right. I just wanted to let you (all) know that there might be problems with unauthorized debits, if you paid with a credit card at RCZ.
Me personally, I have paid several times by bank transfer at RCZ and it worked well. I do not recommend by bank transfer in general.
To switch back to the topic:
After weeks of only a few commute rides with my bike (because of a holiday and a combination of too much work and poor health), I am optimistic to start my project of a 'high performance bike on a budget'.
First step will be ... a swap of the fork.

My VR arrived, first EMTB so very much enjoying the assistance on the climbs. FIrst impressions are that its very planted but the fork is a lot harsher than my pike select on my mtb.

Looking at forks, like the idea of a fox36/38 but no real deals from the UK at 170mm. RCZ shop is a lot cheaper than everywhere else but don't seem to ship to the uk and I expect even if they did i'd get hit with another 30% or so for vat and import

Could look second hand but looks like the current steerer is around 200mm which reduces options

I've read a few Facebook posts where people seem happy with the fork - so either they're not hitting it very hard (only low speed damping) or some of the Zeron's aren't faulty.. Mine went back, but would imagine it will be a slow turn around with it being then shipped to Suntour. Presumably, if it's working properly, it should be ok as a fork .... (or I'm making a huge and incorrect presumption - but Vitus seemed pretty on the ball with this bike so I can't see them shipping it knowing the fork was pants).

Merlin Cycles have the Fox 36 on offer, but in 160. Though I always find Fox forks generally seem to sit about 10mm higher than Rockshox.

Not sure if you could do a damper swap on the Zeron, but by the time you've invested in it, it's probably cheaper to buy a different fork.

My final build ... for now anyway .. still might swap out the shock for the Fox Performance, but will stick with the stock one for the moment as so far I'm really happy with it.

1696764108917.png

Disks/Rotors .... went back to stock, they're heavier than the ice-tech but seem to work well.

Rear caliper - stock Tektro. Front TRP. Levers - TRP. The calipers performance wise and feel wise are pretty similar so you only really need a lever swap if you want more power.

Fork - 170mm 29" Fox 38 Performance GRIP E-bike spec. The Grip damper's slightly better for lighter riders and the e-bike spec means the rest of the damping is also slightly softer.

I think pretty much everything else I've put back to stock. The bars and stem feel good and aren't heavy.

Mudguards have come off the Jam2 (same bolt on RRP fits the Fox 38 with a different angle spacer).

Loam Lab grips and bar ends/tree/rock sliders with a granite tool in one side (From Kenevo).

Stock grips are super light - 88g for 2 ! (Spesh 110g, Raceface 146g, Loamlabs with ends 170g, 200g with Granite as it replaces the LL compression clamps).

One up pump and tools, from the Jam - 287g with mud.

Pricing (it's supposed to be "Discount bike which can do anything the others do - as well as or better") :

Bike €2700 (Bikester.fr with day 1 pricing error)
Forks Fox 38 €450 (RCZ)
Star Nut/Crown Race €5.30 (bike shop).
Brakes TRP full set €90 (Bike Discount.de)
Pedals €35ish ? (well, free, it was a voucher) Nukeproof, they're a bit crap really - don't spin freely, need to strip them.
Bolt Check at Bike shop (Warranty by Bikester).
Wheel Truing - free at bikeshop.

Snag points :

Still get some random chain slip of some variety and can't work out when or why, it's rare, but annoying !

Bike shop re-aligned the rear wheel, it had been built offset to the none drive side, I'd already seen it but decided it was built offset for some reason ! :) They didn't think so.

Charging - Most of the time, plug into the mains and then into the bike and it charges. Sometimes you can do it the other way, but need to rotate the charge plug so I might just have a crappy connection.

Tubeless - They seem to take a while before they stop very slowly bleeding pressure - This may also be the valves at the incorrect tension or just ineptitude from the person who did it....

Looks like the gear cable might rub on the seatstay over time, so that want's some tape on it :

My Suntour fork is not working correctly for sure. I can turn the rebound knob as long as I want without reaching an end. So good to hear that there might be some forks which seem to work well.
I am not 100% sure, but it should be possible to travel the fox 36 up to 170mm. But this may void the warranty.

600k ... Still working :)

Loving the Fox 38's - balances the whole bike out perfectly, though still haven't abused them properly.

Need to spend some time looking at the silly chain slip thing. Thought it was only doing it when excessively bumpy, but did it three times this morning on easy bits and one of those wasn't even under hard pedalling. Does only seem to do it in the 11t now though.

I stopped washing my other bikes a couple of years ago so this will be wash free from new. Just let it dry, brush it off, squirt it with silicone or something and wipe it down once in a while ... I can't decide if it's the bike or just me actually looking and noticing, but the downtube seems to be magnetic to crap !

This was clean a couple of hours ago.

It could also be the tyres, if you have the time to look, they seem to quickly clog and then eject at higher speeds.

I'm old enough to remember you telling me to pipe down when I wanted to swap forks on my jam. 🥳
Well yeah ! You had OK working forks to start with ! I had 100 year old unlubed barn find Zeron pogo sticks that made the vanmoof feel like a safer DH option.

I'll be really upset if someone at suntour dismantles my damper and finds it was full of nice beer - I think I should get that bit back.
