Hi I am new to the EMTB world and I have just bought a Focus Thron which I would ideally like to upgrade the brakes. The bike has FOX 34 Float Rhythm 29, E-Bike forks fitted with Shimano BR-MT520, 4 piston brakes. I aren’t the lightest of guys and was looking at fitting a Magura 220 roto to the front with Magura MT5 brakes or MT7. Would this be possible? if not any recommendations of a suitable replacement to run with 203mm rotors would be appreciated. Thanks.

Would certainly be possible. You’d just need a post mount adaptor from the stock post (I’m assuming 180mm) to 220mm and then just replace the disk.

the rear brake will be a bit more involved as in some cases you need to drop the motor a bit to run the hose through. Either way, not a big job.

i read a comparison (I will add here it if I find it again) a little while back summing up the difference in deceleration times between different calipers all on a 200mm rotor and the stopping power between the MT5 and the Shimano MT520 was negligible. So if you are going to change calipers just skip to the MT7’s. Else the cheapest is probably to keep the shimanos and go for a 180 to 220 post mount adaptor and slap a 220 disk in there.
