Just done a bearing change and fitting it back together I was a bit puzzled by the bolt and bearing sealing design. The bolts which face outward all have rubber sealing lips. However on the inside of the bracket there is no sealing. There are four inner spacers, two at the front and two on the back which are shaped to leave a small gap between the spacer and the bracket bearing housing. So there is no sealing to prevent water or dirt ingress between the spacer and the inner rubber seal on the bearing itself. The middle bearing has no spacer or sealing on the inside.
I have assumed that this is deliberate so resisted the temptation to fill this gap with either ordinary waterproof grease or some much heavier duty silicone grease which I have, thinking that this might defeat the design intention. Is this correct or not?
