The headset on my sons allmtn X2.5 is making an awful clicking sound, I have a feeling he has overtightened it. The clicking gets worse if you tighten it further. I have a feeling it may not have sealed bearings.
How do I go about identifying it correctly? Are kits made by other companies?

I’m not familiar with this headset but the stem bolt on mine is only torqued to 4nm…then I tighten the stem clamp bolts to torque spec. Either you or your LBS could inspect the headset bearings for wear or damage.

I would be amazed if they weren't sealed races. Getting info on race size is tricky, best bet is to pull the fork and take out the upper and lower races, measure them and order to size from somewhere.

Somewhere like this lists some sizing info:
MTB Mountain Racing Road Bike Sealed Headset Bearings MH-P03K MR042 MR127 MR170 | eBay
None of the kits I have found online have very good descriptions but one of them did have open races. As you say will have to strip it and see.
