Shin Guard Recommendations

I'm 6'2". I'm tired of tearing up my shins on single track bushes, cactus, and thorny mesquite (the worst). I've been riding mountain bikes since I lived in Marin County in the early 80s and have never messed up my knees. I'm looking for budget friendly adult shin guards with a hard shell, preferably black. I've looked at soccer shin guards because they're a lot cheaper. Any recommendations?

I've been using these ONeal ones for two years - work perfectly and mean I can choose whether to wear knee pads or not.

Older style cloth hockey or soccer shin pads fit comfortably and well under knee pads and I always wear them. You can get newer ones made of plastic in sports shops, but they are sweaty.

The reasons:
To avoid sticks that pivot up like spears into my shins;
No more gouges from flat pedal pins;
Crash protection;
Allows me to skim past whippy plants and brambles;
Reduces chance of snakebite (this is a real issue as you have the chance of riding over snakes in Australia, which almost happened to me yesterday).
