Hi guys,
I recently got a local tech to switch my Shimano 10-51t (12s m8100) to an electronic shifter (SRAM Eagle AXS GX).
Given that the chain and cassette were good, I asked him to keep them (I might switch soon). He made the change and told me that the chain didn't need to be shortened.
when I received the bike, everything was tight (on the smallest cog, the chain seemed tight enough). Mid way through my first ride, I noticed the chain started slipping. I played with the app setting and micro adjustments, but it didn't quite work. At the end of the ride, I noticed that on the smallest cog, the chain was very loose now. I went back to the guy and he tightened things right up.
Next ride, same story. This time, I had some tools with me and I also took the plastic adjuster that comes with the kit. The B screw needed to be tightened. I closed it a bit and went back to riding.
Next ride - again, same story. I had to tighten it again. This time, I did it without regards to the plastic adjuster, just using the tightness I was expecting to see.
My wife has a regular MTB and had the same exact process. Hers did not slip in any way, it worked the first time out...
The initial reaction I had was "chain too long", despite everyone telling me that they did the same switch without readjusting their chain length.
I also don't understand how, even if the chain is too long, the B adjustment needs to be tightned with each ride... The difference between where the B screw was when I started and now is pretty dramatic (I started with it almost fully open, now it's about mid way in).
I'm leaning towards either:
1. Maybe chain length is the problem, but then I'd have to go to a tech (maybe a different one)
2. The chain measures fine, in terms of wear (0.25)
3. Maybe something else is wrong with the setup or the derailleur and I'm compensating for something else that's off...
WDYT?
