• Warning!!

Riding a tuned or deristricted EMTB is not a trivial offence and can have serious legal consequences. Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. Deristricting EMTB's can also add increased loads for motors and batteries. Riding above the local law limit may reclassify the bike as a low-powered bike, requiring insurance, registration and a number plate.

Be aware of your local country laws. Many laws prohibit use of modified EMTB's. It is your responsibility to check local laws. Ignoring it, has potential implications to trail access, and risk of prosecution in the event of an accident.

Shimano Steps e6100 Derestricted Question

I've used St Unlocker to change my e6100 region to the US, effectively changing the limit to 20mph. I've now used the bike to commute this week 14 miles a day and first off wow what a difference. I'm actually quite rarely going 20mph as my commute includes some areas with many dog walkers and paths branching off, but during the flat open sections with good visibility, being able to eat up the miles at 18 - 20mph has totally changed the experience.

My question though relates to the fact that the motor is essentially constantly working now, whereas on the 15mph cutoff it would spend at least some sections only intermittently on or altogether off as I was manually pedalling past the limiter. Are these motors designed with failsafe installed and/or designed with the US market in mind where they may be whirring away for 40 minutes straight at a time? I have actually been using the medium power setting rather than the highest with this worry in mind, as I don't want to overwork the motor. I find that I am never getting to that 'teetering on the limit' point where the motor is on/off regularly like it was with the 15mph limit.

Thanks in advance. I understand the implications of derestricting and that any damages caused after doing so are my own responsibility. I just want to make sure from an objective standpoint whether these motors are designed for the higher limits?
