Answered Shimano Deore XT brake question

Ok a dead easy question here but I thought I better ask before touching.

I’ve got what appears to be a barrel adjuster on my brake levers. What exactly do they do and when do I need to turn them?

big easily turned by hand one is lever reach adjustment (distance lever sits from bars)
small one which needs a cross head screwdriver to turn is bite point adjust - Which does pretty much nothing useful over not having it at all
