Shimano chain, Sram cassette

I have a few spare Shimano chains from a previous emtb, my current bike has a Sram cassette, will the Shimano chains be compatible?

Oddly enough it can depend on the drivetrain, in terms of how many gears. 11 speed Shimano chains work fairly well on 11 speed Sram cassettes/chainring. 12 speeds things changed a lot. Shimano's 12 speed chains have a smaller inner width than Sram compatible chains. They usually function, albeit noisy, but will wear out both chain and cassette/chainring faster.
