Shiman EP8 Switch Issue (SW-EM800-L_

I've got an e-bike with Shimano EP-8 motor and mode selector switch SW-EM800-L.. At home (i.e. in the garage) the switch works flawlessly and changes the mode without issue, however, today when out riding the bike for the first time the switch stopped working and I couldn't change the mode. Is the wire to the switch (at the switch end) permanent or is it plugged in? If plugged in how temepramental can it be to not being plugged in correctly? If it is plugged in, then I'll try and unplug it tomorrow and re-fit it.

It plugs into the back of the display, use the tool that came with your bike to make sure its seated right.
