Security whilst out riding

What do you guys do regarding security whilst out riding. Do you carry a bike lock with you, if so do you have any recommendations. I like to stop for a coffee most times I’m out and I’m a little bit worried about leaving an expensive machine just propped against a wall. Looking for a nice discreet, light lock I can carry or secure to the bike.

I make it a rule to NEVER leave my bike unless it is with someone I trust or is safely locked up. But just in case.......

I carry one of these retractable cable locks in my back pack.
Combination Cable Lock

OK, it will not stop a determined thief, but it will make him move on to someone' else's bike that isn't locked. When a group of us stop for a cafe break, even if we can see where the bikes are, out come the locks and we intertwine the locks amongst the bikes. That stops someone just running up and taking one.

Small combination lock in an under-seat pack.

I use the Topeak quick release system as I share different sized packs between different bikes as they have differing contents (work keys, spare lights, snood, tyre goo, etc). Very happy with it overall, removes the thinking before each ride, just grab the right one and go.

I have one of those for my snowboards, never occurred to me to use it on my bike, will be going in my pack now!

I actually run with a kryptonite D-lock in my backpack. I put it in a "laptop" style wallet so it is flat against my back and you don't notice it is there. I do have a cable lock under my saddle when I don't have a ride or trip planned where I may have to stop somewhere for long.

I use an Abus Bordo alarm. This is a folding lock with an alarm built in. I had a good look at D locks but they are heavy and hard to carry. The Bordo alarm folds up and I strap it to my top tube with Velcro straps when I need it. So no heavy weight in my backpack. It's still a hefty lock but not super heavy and has the added advantage of an alarm to deter opportunists. They're expensive but then so is my bike!

I've had experience with the Bordo locks and can rate them. We sell a fair few of them here and the fold up style is quite useful! Spending a big chunk on locks is never a bad idea - protects your investment but unfortunately, same with my motorbike, if someone wants it bad enough, they'll try their best! :(

I’ve also got the combo lock at the top. If someone is gonna have it they will. My last bike got stolen out of my locked car. But then my bike isn’t the all signing and dancing ebike variety. I’m deterring someone lobbing in their van or jumping on it.

Yup. 2 years ago, a Santa Cruz I had been building for a while got nicked. Such a shame but that's the reality of it. I wasn't fussed about the fact it was gone as much as the sentimental loss really. Oh well, that was then - now I'm extra careful!

Same with me. That was my first eBike, did 1500 miles on it and had a real bond with it. Not sure theifs really realise what they are stealing, or care. Once bitten and all that..

Such is life hey. Still smiling and got another one 8 months later when I scraped the money together again :)

My cheapo combination cable lock finally silted up from all the dust in my pack and jammed. I got this one instead by ABUS. They have different cable lengths and 3 or 4 digit locks. I bought the 4 digit lock with the 120cm cable. I bought one for my gradson's bike as well, so I got a £5 off voucher code from Tredz as the total was over £30.

Hiplok Z Lok Combo (the thick zip tie with a combo lock) is in my bag at all times for *very* brief, still-in-view, stops at cafe's in relatively safe locations.

I do wonder if a small cheap padlock to the disc rotor is a good idea, just enough to stop a ride-off theft...

The rest of the time, if I am on an epic day ride and know I will potentially leave the bike out of view for a bit, I lug a Krypto Evo Mini. Gold rated and 'only' 1kg. Don't notice the weight in my backpack, but for those rides I am fully loaded with kit, range extenders, extra water...

Saw a Ebike theft on Facebook last week two guys hoods up in England somewhere , one had a grinder loads of people passing 2 minutes job done. I never leave it to be honest. If i am away in camper and kayaking or hillwalking its wheels off and in van. I had a bike stolen many years ago from shed so always carefull. Could take everything i suppose.

If you use anything but a D lock you might as well not bother locking your bike at all. I wouldn't even leave my bike locked with a D lock for more than a minute or 2.

When I lived in Bristol I locked my road bike to some railings with what I thought was a decent cable lock. I walked off to a cash machine, I was gone for about 1 minute, on my way back to my bike I saw someone riding towards me and thought "that bike looks nice it's the same bike as mine... wait... THAT IS MY BIKE!". I had to chase them and throw them off the bike. They made up some BS about someone selling it to them around the corner. It must have taken them about 15 seconds to steel the bike!

After that I got a D lock and it didn't get stolen again.
