Replace individual sprockets or full cassette?

Just wondering if the norm is to replace a whole cassette in one go or just the sprockets which need replacing?

Surely some sprockets hardly get used so it seems a bit wasteful to dump them all?

I have heard that it is possible, but why bother? Unless you are buying top of the range 12-speed of course, or maybe the EX1?

I can see that in theory it should be the right thing to do, but whole cassettes are made in the millions, or at least the hundreds of thousands. The supply chain and packaging for single cogs should make them expensive.

I am really hoping that someone is going to reply with a link to a site that has every single cog or cluster that I might need at a pro-rata price, plus p&p of course! :)

Na, I looked at this last year.
I did end up putting a 36t front on so in theory moving the main wear towards the middle of the cassette rather than the outside, but tbh forgot about it until I read this.
