Recommend a good phone mount.

I know Quadlock seems to be the industry standard but I'm looking for something less "permanent" and I don't particularly want another phone case. I would only use it when trying to find trails using something like TrailForks, once I've found the trail and I'm on it, typically downhill, single track, I want to put my phone away. So I want something fairly sturdy that doesn't wobble about on the fire trails and is easily removed. I wouldn't expect one of those rubber ones to withstand gnarly trails but a good one may be good enough.

Or should I just bite the bullet and get a Quadlock?

I wouldn't trust anything on a gnarly trail but that is not my requirement and why I want something that is robust enough for mild trails but easily removable. I don't mind paying for the best but again I don't think that what I am looking for needs to be the rolls royce for every situation. I feel sure that one of the rubber style models will do the job but some seem to be better than others so I'm looking for recommendations.

I use a Quadlock 'out front' mount, just mounted it round the other way, works really well. I wouldn't trust any mount at a bike park etc but for general trail riding I haven't had any issues...

I appreciate you didn't want to go down that route but I tried a couple of others before that weren't good enough.

My solution was Quadlock with universal stick on mount. Reason being is I use my daughters old Huawei P8 for putting on the Quadlock while my lovely expensive phone stays safe and snug in my back pack.

I'm thinking more along the lines of removable rubber gizmos. The problem is some are virtually useless so I was hoping personal recommendations would narrow things down a bit.

Sorry haven't used it; waiting to receive it from Amazon.
I also didn't want something permanent; wanted something I could get on and off easily.
I think you can strategically place the straps so that important areas of the screen are not obscured too much.

Try reading the original OP before posting a judgemental reply. I thought I had explained myself satisfactorily. While using TrailForks it's inconvenient to have to keep stopping to delve into my pocket or pack for the phone. So convenience for navigation, not obsession as you rather disparagingly imply.

They do have other uses you know I use a £120 rugged phone as a GPS device while my 'expensive' phone is safely tucked up in my backpack.

The Quadlock I mentioned takes about 10 seconds to remove if required. You would have to buy a rugged case to stick the mount to though.

I may well end up getting the Quadlock as it gets good reviews but I'm reluctant to have to change my iPhone protective case to accommodate fitting so that does count against it for the moment.

I jump my levo 4 ' plus in the air and my Lezyn phone mount and phone dont move a inch. Hands down to Lezyn. They are next level engineering and home based my home town SLO,CA. Mass props . They got a bunch of cool gear for your bike. Big name in the biking industry. Check em out ..... Cheers

Quadlock do specific cases for most iPhones, although it will be a bit chunkier than the one you've got now I expect.

Perhaps I'm not being clear enough. i acknowledge the limitations and advantages of the Quadlock but I'm specifically looking for personal experience of the rubber/silicon type as presented by Sophi777.

Not serious navigation, that was just a general way of describing what I wanted, but Trailforks on the phone is far easier to use than on a Garmin.

I was in the exact same dilemna then saw a review on Youtube where the guy jumped the bike in addition to taking it down rough trails and it didn't budge so quickly purchased a Quadlock. Delivery was very fast - USA, CA - a few days.

Mounted it exactly like above (except I spun around the disc so "Quad lock" is not upside down - yes I'm thaat OCD) and took it out this last weekend. ROCK SOLID on an iPhoneXS granted I didn't try anything too crazy but was very pleased...

Main reason I got it, like others have mentioned, is that it seems everytime I ride on new trails I get lost so wanted to use the nav feature on Trailforks. It worked awesome and the only issue I had was just the phone's screen would wash out in direct sunlight but that's not the holders fault! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

The other side note is that the case really is of high quality... It's like made of a high quality rubber and fits perfectly. I like it better than the OE Apple leather case I had. Downside is you can get it in any color as long as it's black... :-(

I suspect it wasn’t mounted properly. I have a quad lock and been into some serious accident with the phone never coming off. I’m sold on it.

I have this mount: Pros:
Phone stays on really well even on gnarly descents (though it does wiggle a bit)
Low cost
easy to mount or remove
nice quality silicon rubber, seems like it will last
Cons:
The straps block the bottom edge and makes it difficult to swipe up (or dismiss an app)
Easy to position the top straps so that they block the face recognition cut-out.
Blocks other corner swipe gestures.

Bottom line, the Cons over time have become such a pain that I don't recommend it for edge-to-edge touch phones (maybe older phones with a fingerprint home button would be good).
I'm looking to buy something that doesn't cover the phone screen at all like the SP connect system even though its way more expensive and requires you to use (and buy) their case.

I use it as a GPS with trailforks when exploring unfamiliar trails. I have an older phone that I use on the bike.

I use the Ram mount X Grip and have for years, motorcycle, snowmobile and bike. I’ve used it to track a bunch of trail for TrailForks.
Don’t buy the quick clamp, found out that the ball comes off when you crash and hit it?
This mount was also more solid and I had my IPhone camera stabilization go bad and I think was because of the pounding it was getting.
