I live in a wet climate and use a rear fender unabashedly. When I see the little ones that folks use I laugh because I know for a fact that while they may be keeping muck off of the suspension pivot for sure they aren't doing a thing to keep it off your back and behind.....
I opt to use as long of a rear fender as possible which I have found to be the SKS MudRocker. It is ugly but works to keep all muck off my back side as well as the sus pivot and when it stops being mud season I just take it off and set it aside til next mud season. It is a universal deal that will fit any FS bike btw.
Tested and the best option for rear is an @SicoMTB
Perfect fit and good protection of the frame with sufficient coverage, and overall - still looks nice...
