its amazing how difficult snow is to make progress in.
I was once riding an enduro bike at speed across a trail that was about a foot deep and bearing in mind I had 300mm travel at each end, I hit the snow with the throttle cracked wide open so the front would lift a bit and the next thing I know, im on my back having gone over the bars :D
good times. anymore than a few inches and I dont bother.. its so rocky here that its just death in the snow :D

Haven't ever stopped to measure it but hub deep is probably about as deep as I've ridden in successfully
I used to ride with quite a few folk with fatbikes and whenever I rode my normal hardtail with them in the snow I'd find their massive 4"+ tyres weren't actually all that much better than my normal 2.35 mtb tyres unless it was a particular type of powder or rutted frozen snow. One of the biggest issues we found when snow got deeper was the wheels filling up with snow between the spokes and it then becoming so heavy it became |seriously hard work.
Motor assistance means normal FS Emtbs are pretty easy to ride in snow and a lot more fun than Fatbikes.

Gonna try again today with the FS and new Maxxis 2.6 Assigia. F/R.
Followed some skidoo tracks last year. Had to keep up the speed until I saw a lone snowshoe’r in the distance. I started yelling, since I didn’t want to stop, but they must’ve been listening to music. Had to stop cause it was 5’ deep on both sides of the track. They didn’t even noticed me (10m away). The descent was fun though.
Lower elevation snow conditions have to be just right. Powder snow is nice.
