I have posted some photos from near Dudley, West Midlands, UK.

One of the photos shows the Parkhead Viaduct. Originally constructed from wood in 1850, the current brick construction was completed in 1880.

The other photo shows the entrance to the Dudley tunnel. Although the brickwork shows 1884, the 2.9km tunnel was actually completed in 1791.

It fills me with awe when I consider the incredible abilities of engineers from that era.

The West Midlands is well-served by canals. Though rendered obsolete by railways and motorways, they have a new lease of life serving leisure pursuits: cycling, walking, boating, etc. Birmingham actually has more canals than Venice and in recent years many desirable canalside properties have been built.
